Classroom Happenings!

We started the month with a "READ-OUT" for Read Across America Day!

PreK, Mrs. Alexander's and Mrs. Guidry's classes have been so busy. We worked on Texas and Texas symbols, fiction and nonfiction, Dr. Seuss and spring. We looked at characters, setting and beginning/middle/end. We sang songs and read books. SO fun!

Kindergarten worked on author studies, spring, plants and completed research on farm animals. They are amazing learners!

First grade classes are in the middle of research about animals and we have practiced research with famous African Americans. They have learned about IIM (Independent Investigation Method) that is our process for research. I am amazed at the products first graders can create. We heard stories and learned about Texas symbols in a magazine. First grade also worked on fables, folk tales and fairy tales. Ask your first grader about the "sign" for books that are told and retold.

Second Grade has been working on their animal research in their science classes, nonfiction text features and paragraph writing to go along with animal research in their language arts classes. Their products about their animals were amazing! It is very exciting to see the students notice that the questions they have in research turned into the main ideas in their research product! Their information gathered is turning into the supporting details! We also spent a full lesson learning about our author/storyteller, Tim Tingle.

Third grade has worked on cultures, inferencing, and more traditional literature. Ms. Stevens' students checked out various types of traditional literature to summarize. Mrs. Byrd's friends are going through the research process with a country of their choice. They asked great questions in the goal setting phase! Mrs. Williams' friends spent library time working on cause and effect.

Fourth grade has been working hard getting ready for their tests. I know they are working on figurative language and poetry writing each week. We'll get to work with more of the poetry elements during National Poetry Month.

Fifth grade classes are using the library mostly for their 40 book projects and science and social studies work. Mrs. Matula has been checking out so many resources for their work on the Civil War in social studies. Ms. Tamez's class is working on poetry in the library. We're writing free verse to start with and seeing how poetry fits in with the writing process.
