Levelland ISD Newsletter
February 28, 2022
Hello All!
In everything that you do, you are working to prepare our students for their future. You are helping to shape them into young adults who will go out into the world once they graduate from Levelland ISD. You all do such an amazing job of serving our students and working with them to reach their potential. Opportunities don't happen, they have to be created, and you are helping our students create the numerous opportunities they will encounter. You are instilling the passion it takes for our students to follow their dreams. Thank you for all the wonderful experiences you ensure our students are involved in. It is always a great day to be a Levelland Lobo!
Best to you,
Becky McCutchen, Superintendent
LISD is Spotlighting Our CTE Courses Covered During CTE Month!
What are CTE Courses?
Entrepreneur ClassWe begin with LHS students in Mrs. Teresa Carter's Entrepreneurship class. This month, Entrepreneur students are learning about investing and stocks. They are competing in an investing simulation involving a variety of investment instruments. Students were able to select investments and buy or sell as the challenge progressed with the goal of earning the most income. LHS is so lucky to have CTE courses that provide such opportunities. If you want to try your hand at investments go to www.buildyourstax.com. | Certified Nursing Assistants Mrs. Joan Sanders' Health Science Practicum/Certified Nursing Assistant class is a CTE course and offers plenty of opportunities for students after high school. These students are learning what it takes to be a nursing assistant by actively engaging in theory and skills practice that will prepare them to earn a certification as a Nursing Assistant. After practicing personal skills such as nail care, oral care, denture care, hair care, and shaving, students enter into clinicals to demonstrate the necessary skills it takes to move on in the medical healthcare provider field. Thank you, Mrs. Sanders, for teaching such valuable lessons for those entering the healthcare industry. | DronesAs we continue our CTE study of classes, we focus on the Drone class at LMS. Drones were first introduced in the military but we have found many uses for them since, including saving lives with them. So.....LMS is excited to announce that their Drone students in Mrs. Rejino and Mr. Adkins' class placed 2nd overall, 2nd in driver-controlled-field, and 4th in autonomous "programmed" field in the area's first drone competition, "AirBattles!" hosted at Frenship ISD. In this new competition, twelve middle schools participated from around Lubbock and Amarillo. Schools wishing to compete were required to attend a mandatory drone workshop last summer to be able to participate. It was hosted by the TTU Outreach & Engagement Program and James Halloway, a physics and engineering teacher from Frenship ISD. The competition will be bigger next year and of course, LMS students will be ready as more students than ever are interested in learning about Drones! Congratulations to the LMS students who are learning such a valuable skill! And thank you for presenting your skills at the last Board Meeting! You're in the right place! |

Career Prep Mr. Scott Lawson's Career Prep class teaches students among many things. One thing the kids really take pride in is broadcasting the weekly newscast, Hello Lobos! This course is preparing our students to go straight into the news industry after high school teaching technology, communications, journalism, editing, directing, producing, and more. The opportunities in this class are endless and Mr. Lawson lets his students get creative! LHS is so lucky to have this LHS course! | Floral Design As we continue to focus on CTE courses this month we caught students in Taylor Dodson's Floral Design class making Candy Valentine Arrangements! This Floral class teaches different designs, the principles, and the elements of floral design. Students learn about balance, space unity, line, texture, placement, the 400,000 color varieties & sizes of each flower, and more. Students taking this CTE class can continue floral design after high school to pursue a professional floral design career in the floral industry or launch their own floral business. Did you know that there are over 19,000 male florists in the industry, and they make 1.6 times more money than females in the same position? You're in the right place! | Capitol Career Day! Did you know that LISD starts teaching about Careers even when our students are really young? Capitol students have been learned about Careers all month and they experienced Career Day, organized by Counselor Barbara Utley. There were vets, musicians, entomologists, first responders, cotton farmers, and more. The message given by each special guest was, "get the education you need to succeed at what you want to be!" As we finish up CTE Month in LISD, we thank Mrs. Utley for helping students learn more about what they can be! |

JournalismAs we focus on CTE Courses, we found Ms. Kelly Buckner's LHS Yearbook Staff practicing page design rules using candy on Valentine's Day. Photos were crackers, headlines were KitKats, stories were Sour Strips, the eyeline was spaghetti, and captions were Twizzlers. The 2021-22 yearbook is looking "sweet" this year and these students are learning a skill that will help them in a career after high school. You're in the right place! | Computer Maintenance & NetworkingCTE courses give students an option for employment after high school. And Mrs. Teresa Carter's Computer Maintenance and Networking class does just that. LHS students in her class recently sat for their TestOut PC Pro and Network Pro certification testing. They had a 100% pass rate on their respective tests. All of these will take the CompTia A+ certification tests in the near future before building a lab of PCs for the digital design lab at the high school and open more doors for themselves upon graduation. LHS is just awesome to offer this class for kids! You're in the right place! Students are David Torres-Naja, Andrew Mata, Isabelle Romero, Jacob Flores, Crockett Thetford, and Dagon Rangel. | CulinaryCan you believe these are cakes? LHS students in Khris Oaks' CTE Culinary class entered the Chocolate Fantasia Culinary competition of intricate chocolate sculpture and delicious chocolate treats. These students were able to show off their culinary talents at the formal event at TTU. Mrs. Oaks' class gives students the potential to grow in amazing directions for their future. Sea Turtle: Elie Muniz, Manuel Gillen Mendez & Adrian Rodrigues won First Place in the secondary division. Monkey: Carly Tienda, Jayden Flores & Angelica Gonzales (not pictured) placed Second in the secondary division. Congratulations to these students and Mrs. Oaks! You're in the right place! |

Woodworking LHS students in Coach Brogden's Woodworking class have teamed up with Capitol Elementary's PTA to prepare games for their Parent Engagement Nights. This class teaches skills to students that will give them an opportunity after high school to be in a business of their own or to help put themselves through college! Aren't we lucky to have such great classes offered here at LISD? You're in the right place! | Connecting with the Community LHS always loves connecting with our community and they did just that to finish up CTE Month! Interim Hospice Nurses visited students in Mrs. Joan Sanders' Health Science Practicum Class to teach about helping patients entering into hospice and what to expect. We are so lucky to have this course that prepares students for a job after high school! You're in the right place! | More on Career Day Capitol Elementary students have studied different careers all month long. Students celebrated by dressing up as what they wanted to be when they grow up! It was a great day to look up-close at different career paths of our world. You're in the right place! |
