Principal's Message

Dear Chehalem Families,

We are finished with another great week of learning. Please read on for news of things going on in the coming weeks.

As always, reach out if you need anything.

Sincerely, Angee Silliman

New Counselor Joining Our School

Goodbye Miss. G and Hello Miss T.!

We have been so lucky to have Miss Gustafson working with us as a counselor this past year. She has loved her time with us, but has accepted a position at West Linn/Wilsonville High where she did her internship. We wish her the best as she transitions to her new position.

In one week we will be welcoming Miss Miranda Trullench as our new counselor. Miss T. did some of her practicum in Ms. Lamey's class two years ago, so she already knows our school and some of our students. She has been working as a counselor at a charter school in Hillsboro this past year.

Miss G. has been working with Miss T. to ensure a smooth transition.

Welcome Miss T!

Talented and Gifted (TAG) Information

Every year students are considered for Talented and Gifted services in the Beaverton School District. These services are provided by your child's classroom teacher(s). Oregon law and District policy define gifted students as those who score at or above the 97th percentile on a standardized, nationally normed test of mental ability and/or academic achievement in reading and/or math. Behavioral, learning, and/or performance information is also considered before a student is identified for TAG services.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and our current reality of Comprehensive Distance Learning, our evaluation process will look different this year. We will administer in-person TAG testing after January 11, 2021. Until then, teachers will collect evidence on how your student responds to differentiation within their distance learning classroom. This evaluation may include: file reviews, teacher and student observations, a collection of work samples, and/or individual or group assessments. This process may take some time, but every effort will be made to complete the evaluation in a timely manner. Parents will be notified of their school’s in-person testing dates in January.

Parent Session October 19th

Would you like to connect with other parents and families transitioning to Comprehensive Distance Learning? Chehalem caregivers are invited to a free Zoom event hosted by Em Rochford on Monday, October 19th at 3:00-4:00 to share your experiences, get support, and help identify needed resources.

Remember the Book Bus Next Monday!

Ms. Blanchard, Mr. Sanborn and Ms. Harder all went out on the book bus last week and 24 students checked out sets of books. Let's try to beat that number this week! Every Monday they will be going to 5 stops in our attendance area. Bus Map Here. You can zoom in to see the stops closer up and figure out your walking route to get to the closest one. The approximate bus stop times are listed on the map. We are trying to get these times shifted to start after 2:30 so students don't miss instructional time, and the order of stops might change in the future. I will share that updated information with you.

If your child wants to request specific books, please have them complete the following book request forms.

Ms. Blanchard's Google Form to put books on hold (This is the shortened version for K-1 grades)

Ms. Blanchard's Google Form to put books on hold

Ms. Blanchard will be curbside with books for students to check out during the lunch pick up times on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11-12 and again in the afternoon from 4:30-6:00. She has book bags by either reading levels or interest/topic for students to choose from.

You can return books any day by placing them in the blue tub near the entrance of the school. Books are left to sit for at least 3 days before being re-shelved or put back into circulation.

Tech Tips

Move-A-Thon Continues! Only One Week Left!

The virtual Move-A-Thon continues next week!!! Please see the flyer and video below.

Each year the PTO funds projects, activities, books and events, as well as $400 to each teacher for classroom needs. Our biggest fundraiser of the year is the Mustang Move-A-Thon! Students will track minutes of movement and exercise between October 14-21 and collect pledges or donations through the Pledgestar website. Students can earn fun prizes to show their Chehalem pride and promote a healthy lifestyle. The grade level that accrues the most minutes will have their teachers complete a goofy obstacle course. Even though our school year is different, we're continuing to support our community and plan for events in the spring. Thank you for your support! If you have questions, email
