THE POWER OF SOCIAL MEDIA
In all my years as an educator and parent I haven’t come across one thing that has the power to lift someone up and or tear them down more than Social Media. As school administrators we are often called on by parents and students because of a social media post that has negatively impacted the student, who it was about, and they are worried about coming to school. We step in and help the best we can with what can be referred to as cyberbullying. Through our conversations with students we find that what they say on social media they would not say to the person’s face. We talk about the importance of one's words and actions and that both have the ability to impact someone positively or negatively, and to always remember what we want to be remembered for.
Social Media has the power to lift someone up or tear them down…. I encourage everyone to use it to lift others up in a positive and productive way. To remember the old adage… if you can’t say something nice don’t say anything at all. To remember the power of human kindness often requires courage and strength….courage and strength that we have seen over and over again this past year across our community. Together we have the power to do amazing things to lift up those around us.
