Family Life in Chile

Family is very important to the Chilean people

It is customary for women to bear two family names; he maiden name and her husband's surname.

Family Structure

  1. Communal family life
  2. Children take care of parents in their old age
  3. Children live with parents until they marry

Gender Roles

  1. Female equality progressing
  2. Men work
  3. Father makes decisions with mother's influence

Children/Parent Relationships

  1. Children take care of parents in their old age
  2. Boys help with repairs and errands
  3. Girls help around the house and help to take care of their siblings
