From Your Stated Clerk

We would all agree that our church is at a new milestone or turning point in our history. It reminds me of the Mackinac Bridge. If you've never crossed it, try to do so this year. It affords a great view of the Mackinac Straits as well as a gateway to the Upper Peninsula.

If you're on the bridge, headed south, as you approach Mackinaw City, it's very much like sitting on the top of a pyramid, with several choices to make. If you turn onto US23, you will follow the Lake Huron shoreline to places like Alpena and Oscoda. US31 will take you to the other side of the state through Petoskey and Traverse City. Staying on I75 is the most popular and fastest way back to this corner of the state, but try one of those other roads if you get the chance.

We will be making similar choices in the next couple of years about what direction we're headed in. The area of Mission and Outreach into the community comes to mind. Maybe we'll change some things in our Order of Worship. I'm hoping we'll make some changes in the Session Docket and Minutes to make them less cumbersome, but that's just me. The point is, we need to prayerfully and thoughtfully consider the changes we might be making with the help of Pastor Rich.

"With God all things are possible."

2023 Per Capita

Per capita is a fundamental way in which all Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) congregations support the work of the wider Church.

Each year it costs OLCC,P almost $36 for each member. When the full amount is not covered by the congregation, the money comes out of our Mission Budget. If all of the members of OLCC,P would prayerfully consider paying their own family’s per capita, it would allow your Mission Team to have more to give to others in need.

The 2023 Per Capita offering is $35.95 per OLCC,P member. To provide your per capita online, please visit the OLCC,P website, select the “Giving” tab, select “Donate Online” found on the top right side of the page, and follow the instructions.

(If you use offering envelopes, a Per Capita envelope is included.)

Monthly Offering Envelopes

If you make your offering using monthly envelopes, they are now available in the Lakeview Area for pick up this Sunday.

Mice in Building at OLCC,P

OLCC,P currently has a noticeable mouse population in the building. Building and Grounds has hired a pest control company to resolve the situation.

Going forward, we need your help! Please be sure that all food products in the church are stored in sealed plastic containers (not baggies) or in the refrigerators. If you have an event in the church with food, please empty garbage cans before you leave and dispose of them in the dumpster.

Your cooperation is greatly appreciated!!

Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church zoom study led by Rev. Dr. Loren Scribner

Our friends at Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church have invited us to join another zoom study led by Rev. Dr. Loren Scribner. Information from GIPC is below. If you have any questions, please contact Betsy Telford, starryskys@comcast.net.

The text, Calvin for Armchair Theologians, was written by Dr. Christopher Elwood, Associate Professor of Historical Theology at Louisville Presbyterian Seminary.

A note from our series leader, Loren:

An armchair theologian is a person who has been educated in a field other than theology, and who probably works at a job that raises few theological or biblical issues, but who is enthusiastic about the faith and life of the church he or she attends.

Calvin, as most know, is considered the "father" of the Reformed faith, which includes the Presbyterian Church. However, Calvin has also had great influence upon the Baptist Churches in America. For instance, one conservative Southern Baptist scholar, Dr. Steven J. Lawson, in his YouTube address on "The Legacy of John Calvin," claims that Calvin is the single most important person in the last 1,000 years of Western history. Lawson claims that to omit John Calvin from Western civilization is to read history with one eye closed.

Well, whether you agree with that or not, Calvin has exerted great influence on Western Christianity, including Methodists, Baptists, Congregationalists, Episcopalians, and, get this....hard core "capitalists."

So, if you are one of those armchair theologians who love the church, and want to join in an examination of Calvin's contribution to your own understanding (consciously or unconsciously) of the Christian faith, you are invited to join us for this introduction to Calvin and the influence of his service to God.

This series will be offered HYBRID, meaning both in person at GIPC and on Zoom for our remote participants. Weekly emails will go out with Zoom link details and reminders. Class will begin 6:45pm Wednesday evenings and conclude around 8pm.

The book can be purchased on Amazon in paperback or Kindle form. If you require assistance purchasing the book, please contact Kelsey Waugh (kpwaugh@gmail.com OR 734.626.6936).

We look forward to seeing you there! Questions about the series? Please contact Sue Hurst (hursts@wowway.com) or Mike Reynolds (mike.reynolds.gi@gmail.com).

Did you know that the OLCC,P church library is available for all of us to use? We have a fiction section, a children’s bookcase, Chicken Soup for the Soul, devotional books and books by popular Christian authors like Max Lucado. There are books on grief, health issues, parenting. And of course many books to support Bible study. Some selected books are on the shelves in the gathering area, but the library itself is just beyond Heritage Hall. Next time you are at church, feel free to check out a book.
