Mayfield Messenger

Welcome to the 2022-2023 School Year!

Message from Dr. Frischkorn

Welcome Back Mayfield Intermediate School!

On behalf of the staff at Mayfield Intermediate School, I would like to welcome our students and their families back for the 2022-2023 school year. We will open our doors on Wednesday, August 10th at 7:00 AM for 860 students. We are excited about the year ahead and can't wait to share our stories of student successes throughout the school year. We constantly use the hashtag #MayfieldISProud to share the incredible things our students and staff do throughout the school year. I feel fortunate to be the proud principal of this wonderful school community, and I want everyone to know that we have a special place for learning right here in the heart of Manassas.

Additionally, we want to ensure that every student that walks through our doors has a great connection with the Mayfield staff. We believe that no student at Mayfield Intermediate School is unknown. Our team prides itself on connecting with students, learning what each student needs to experience academic success, and providing the students with the necessary support to succeed.

Finally, we want to strive to be excellent every day. Excellence every day is a motto every stakeholder within our school needs to strive to achieve. Excellence every day is expected of our administrators, teachers, paraprofessionals, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, custodians, students, parents, and any other stakeholder who can positively influence a student within our school.

I look forward to working alongside our community members as we continue to pave the way for our students to succeed.

Always Learning

Dr. Donald Frischkorn

Mayfield Open House

Monday, Aug. 8th, 4-7pm

9400 Mayfield Court

Manassas, VA

The open house is an excellent time for families to come in and visit their child's classroom for the upcoming school year. Our wonderful school counselors will be stationed in front of the school to greet families and provide students and families with their school schedules. Once families receive their schedules, they will enter the school, visit their child's class, and meet the teachers their child will have during the school year.

The open house is also an excellent time for families to bring supplies for their children and drop them off in their child's homeroom.

Mayfield's Administrative Team

Donald Frischkorn: Principal of Mayfield Intermediate School

Mayfield Intermediate School has an outstanding administrative team that loves supporting our students, staff, and community. As principal of Mayfield Intermediate School, I oversee the overall organization of the school and work to support our school in achieving its mission and vision for the future. An essential part of the principal position is serving as the instructional leader who supports the entire community to continue growing and learning.

Brain Moore: 5th Grade Assistant Principal

Mr. Moore has been at Mayfield for the past seven years serving as the school's 5th-grade assistant principal. Mr. Moore works to establish connections with all our 5th-grade students as they transition to Mayfield Intermediate School. Mr. Moore also serves as the school's special education lead and is the point of contact for the special education referral process.

Kelli Huntley: 6th Grade Assistant Principal

Mrs. Huntley has been at Mayfield Intermediate School for three years and works predominately with our school's 6th-graders. Mrs. Huntley loves talking with students and welcoming them in the morning as they come into the breakfast lines. Mrs. Huntley is our school's testing coordinator and will be busy throughout the year as students participate in the WiDA ACCESS assessments, the two Virginia State Growth Assessments, and the end-of-the-year SOL assessments.

Social Contracts

The foundation for Mayfield Intermediate School's success is based on our ability to create a learning environment that is positive, supportive, and focused on growth. We also strive for each classroom to become a high-functioning team of students and staff members who work together and help one another grow.

At the beginning of the school year, each classroom will work on creating a Social Contract. The Social Contract is simply an agreement on how the class will handle different situations. The Social Contract has four key questions.

  1. How do you want to be treated by me (leader)?
  2. How do you want to be treated by each other?
  3. How do you think I (leader) want to be treated by you?
  4. How do you want to treat each other when there is conflict?

School Hours- 7:15 AM-2:20 PM

Mayfield Intermediate School is the first school to start in the morning and the first school to finish. Our doors open up for students at 7:00 AM, and students need to be in their homeroom class by 7:15 AM. We can feed all students breakfast and have them in their classrooms by 7:10 AM daily. The early hours may take time for students to become accustomed to starting the school year. It will be important that our students get enough sleep. So that may lead to an established bedtime for your child as the summer ends and we begin preparing for the new school year.

Student Dismissal Begins at 2:10 PM. Teachers escort their class from the building in a quick and orderly fashion. Teachers do a great job of ensuring that students get on their correct bus numbers at the beginning of the year and that our dismissal runs smoothly throughout the year.

Parents can still choose to pick up and drop off their children throughout the school year. Parents need to enter through the main entrance and proceed to the front parking loop of the school. At the beginning of the year, we will work with two lanes for arrival to help get students into school before the 7:15 AM Tardy Bell.

Please be advised that the parent drop-off line tends to be very crowded during the first month of school. The most consistent way to ensure that your child arrives at school on time is to have your child ride the school bu. Please use the link below to help you find your child's bus stop during the school year.

School Design

Mayfield Intermediate School can accommodate over 1,000 students. For the 2022-2023 school year, our student population will be about 850 students in the fifth and sixth grades. The school has four different campuses. Each campus has its name. Our sixth-grade students' classes occur on the first floor of the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and the Virginia Tech (VT) campuses. The fifth-grade students have classes on the second floor in the George Mason University (GMU) campus and the James Madison University (JMU) campus.

Eight homerooms of class sizes ranging from 24 to 28 students are present on each campus. Each campus has a shared learning space in the middle of the campus used for collaborative learning and small group work. Within the classrooms, you will find that the design of the rooms facilitates small group instruction that increases the teacher's ability to work with students based on their current level of academic performance.

Daily Schedules

Students at Mayfield Intermediate School will have four core content classes during the school year. Our students' four core content classes are mathematics, science, language arts, and social studies. All students will receive 100 minutes of instruction daily in language arts and mathematics. Students will receive 45 minutes a day of instruction for science and social studies. Below you can see the schedules for the two 5th-grade campuses at Mayfield.

Encore Rotation

Students at Mayfield Intermediate School get to participate in a 4-day rotation for their encore classes. Students will rotate between art, physical education, library/STEM, and a music choice (Orchestra, Band, Chorus). Each day students will attend one encore class for a 70-minute block of time. Students will travel to encore classes with their homeroom classes. The encore schedule is different from years past, but we believe this new rotation will allow our students to have larger chunks of instructional time and become more engaged in the lesson. This new schedule will also lessen the number of transitions between classes our students have during the day.

Below, you can find a brief description of each of the encore classes our students will participate in while here at Mayfield Intermediate School.

Physical Education:

The Health and Physical Education class will be on a four-day rotation, each class being 70 minutes in length. Students will have 35 minutes of Health instruction and 35 minutes of Physical Education Instruction during each class. In Health, students will learn about Nutrition, Body Systems, Personal Health, Substance Abuse, and other health-related topics. In P.E., students will participate in various fitness and sports activities to gain exposure to many different forms of physical activity.

Art:

This year-long class combines activities and projects designed to promote critical thinking skills, nurture creativity, build confidence, and develop communication skills. Students are provided opportunities to experiment with various art mediums and art styles.

Library and STEM:

Students will regularly visit our newly redesigned Mayfield Intermediate School Library during their encore period. The students will participate in a lesson that focuses on one of the SOL standards for English and Language Arts in the library. When the students visit STEM classes, they will participate in hands-on learning activities that support the standards of learning for science.

Music:

  • Orchestra

The students will have the opportunity to hear and try each of the four instruments (violin, viola, cello, and bass) in the orchestra. Then, they will all choose one to play for the entire year. Later in the year, we will have some concerts in front of parents to show what you have learned. I hope you will join me for orchestra next year!

  • Band

The Mayfield Band has a history and tradition of musical excellence. Next year we will continue to strive towards our goals of high student achievement and outstanding quality in musical performance. In the band, students have the opportunity to play a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument. Over two years in the band at Mayfield, students will practice and prepare for concerts and competitions. Students will learn essential fundamentals of their instruments to prepare them for their future in the band. The Mayfield Band sincerely hopes that the musical experience at Mayfield will be both exciting and rewarding!

  • Choir

Chorus at Mayfield is a chance to use your built-in instrument (your voice) to create music with others. Both fifth and sixth-grade Chorus students will learn basic music terminology and how to perform pitches and rhythms. We will work to prepare a variety of music for performance, including traditional choral pieces and contemporary (pop) arrangements. Mayfield choirs perform multiple concerts throughout the year. Through Chorus, we learn to express ourselves through music.

Lunch and Recess Schedules

Students will have 30 minutes scheduled for their lunchtime. Students will eat lunch with their homerooms and eat at assigned tables. There are eight homerooms eating lunch together at a time. All eight homerooms are from the same campus.

The same eight homerooms from each campus also have a specifically assigned recess time. Recess lasts anywhere from 15-20 minutes per day. Students can play a variety of games.

Student Laptops

Our 5th-grade students will be issued a new Chromebook. Students must understand that this new Chromebook will be their Chromebook for the next four years, and they will need to take great care of the Chromebook. Students will have the Chromebook at Mayfield Intermediate School and Metz Middle School. 6th Grade students will be receiving Dell laptops.

This year students will be leaving their laptops/Chromebooks at school. Every classroom is equipped with a mobile charging station that can charge up to 32 laptops simultaneously. This new process will ensure that students have fully charged laptops during the school day. Additionally, we believe that keeping the laptops in school and charging them in a mobile charging cart within their homeroom will eliminate breakage.

We hope that students follow the "Love Your Laptop" slogan that we share with students. All students need to ensure that they keep their laptops updated and submit work orders when something on their Chromebooks isn't working well.

  1. Keep your laptop updated regularly.
  2. Always carry your laptop in its carrying case.
  3. Submit technology work orders promptly when something is wrong with your laptop
  4. Fully charge your laptop every night
  5. Follow the MCPS Computer Acceptable Use Policy

Clubs and After-School Activities

Mayfield Intermediate School has the luxury of providing transportation to students who stay after-school and participate in extended learning opportunities or other clubs and activities that staff members at Mayfield sponsor. This past year, we offered 5th and 6th-grade basketball, robotics, reading club, art club, and extended learning opportunities for 5th and 6th-grade students.

Staff and student interests guide the clubs that we offer at Mayfield. We look forward to seeing the clubs that we can create next year with our students and staff.

Student Code of Conduct

Students at Mayfield Intermediate follow the same Student Code of Conduct that ALL students in Manassas City Public Schools follow. Students and parents must read and review the Student Code of Conduct Regularly. We keep the Student Code of Conduct attached as a file at the bottom of every Mayfield Messenger that we send.
