1st Six Weeks at a Glance
English
In Honors English, the students began their first unit in Crafting the Essay, which will focus on expository essay and personal narrative writing. Students will be comparing and contrasting the two types of writing as they learn to develop an understanding of both types of writing, and how they can compliment one another. The students will focus on crafting strong and specific theme and thesis statements and developing their first essays and narratives. All students will be reading every day in class and are encouraged to spend time at home reading a self-selected text.

History/PACE
In Texas History this six weeks, we began with the geography of Texas. Students will learn about the 4 regions of Texas and how diverse we are as a state. We will then move into learning about the Native American cultures that established Texas. At the end of the six weeks, the students will learn about European exploration and its contribution to the forming of Texas. Texas has a rich history and we look forward to showing your students just how great Texas is!
In PACE, the first unit is designed to introduce the foundations of Texas culture and the year-long theme of change. Students will explore the geographical regions of Texas. They will learn about early American Indian cultures in Texas and how those cultures adapted to and modified their environments. Students will study the European explorers of Texas, how they changed the American Indian cultures, and how they affected the culture of Texas today.

Meet the English Department
Kristin Ernst
When not at Otto, Kristin enjoys spending time watching her one-year-old daughter, Evelyn, learn and grow, cooking with her husband, drinking coffee, reading, and making decorations for her house. Kristin also enjoys all sports. She played soccer in college and enjoys staying active in her free time whether she is chasing her daughter in the back yard or out for a run.
Erin Kerry
Erin Kerry is in her 11th year of teaching ESL students. She started her career teaching ESL beginners in Irving, and moved to Plano two years ago to be closer to home and begin a new challenge teaching Advanced ESL and on-level English. It may be argued that her first ESL job happened in 3rd grade in California, when her teacher sat her next to a boy who didn't speak English and instructed her to help him read. Currently she is the ESL Department Head and 7th grade English teacher, and can't imagine not having the support of her other rock star English teammates.
She is mother to Isabel, who is in 6th grade at Frankford, and Roman, who will be 2 in Decemeber. She loves learning about other cultures, so the diversity at Otto is perfect for her xenophiliac soul. On the weekend, you'll find her running, reading, or just relaxing at home with her family.
Anna Mackey
Anna has taught grades 5th through 8th. As a 2nd grader, Anna knew she wanted to be a teacher. Vividly, she remembers pretending to be a teacher during summer break. Teaching to imaginary students and taking field trips along the gravel roads in rural Arkansas, Anna is truly living a purposeful-driven life: a TEACHER!
When she is not teaching, Anna enjoys her life as a doggie-mom. Bailee (i.e., Yorkshire Terrier) and Madison (i.e., Havenese) keep her extremely busy taking walks and playing fetch. Still, Anna makes time to escape life by reading, doing DIY's, power-napping, and improving her skills as a novice runner.
Whether Anna is teaching or just simply enjoying life beyond the classroom, she is most passionate about inspiring her students and others to chase their dreams full-spead ahead.
