Professional Development to Support Oregon Therapists
Purpose:
To provide equitable access to a Community of Practice and best-practice knowledge through professional development, forums of collaboration and a supported learning community to OT and PT and those who work with them who are supporting children with orthopedic impairments and other motor challenges to improve district and student outcomes.
Each session begins with a 30 minute presentation plus Q&A time, followed by a case study/didactic of an unidentified student. Contact us if you would like to present a case.

MTSS: The Role of the Related Service Provider

What is the role that Related Service Providers play? Did you know that we are considered Specialized Instructional Support Personnel when we implement interventions using the MTSS framework? We can provide Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions. Come learn all about the tiered systems of support with examples from the field and start implementing some of these ideas in your schools.

This presentation focuses on barriers associated with students experiencing Long COVID symptoms and the supports that schools can put in place to support a student’s access to their education. When barriers are recognized and supports are in place it increases educator capacity in the classroom to focus on instruction, most benefiting historically marginalized groups.

Discussion will center on self-assess and developing a professional development plan. Ways to gain competency will be considered. Session Description:
The focus of this session will be on moving from ‘knowing to doing’ – specifically, on how to build capacity of school personnel and families to promote positive mental health throughout the day by using Every Moment Counts model programs and embedded strategies. Sue will describe how to develop and implement Communities of Practice (CoPs) to foster shared learning, strategic planning, and shared work. She will review the free, online course (SAMHSA funded) that can be used by CoPs to create meaningful change. Opportunities for questions and discussion will be followed by success stories of how this building capacity process has led to school personnel embedding mental health promotion strategies and programs relevant to their context and specific needs.

Reaching Every Writer: Strategies for Success and Empowerment

PRACTICING THE DRILLS: TRAUMA-INFORMED TIPS & TRICKS FOR PRACTICING EMERGENCY DRILLS TO KEEP EVERYONE SAFE

Session Description: The RSOI Professional Learning Team brought focus to the need for a team approach to emergency planning for learners with disabilities nearly five years ago. This led to a partnership with ODE in a federal grant, Welcoming Safe and Inclusive Schools for ALL Students, high quality emergency operation planning. Since that time, guidance to support learners with physical, comprehension or procedural challenges has become a part of the statewide training. Oregon's therapists came together to create the PEEP, Personal Emergency and Evacuation Plan.
In this session, School Safety and Emergency Management program manager, Alex Haislip, from the Oregon Department of Education, will give his best recommendations for preparing your students for emergencies. Alex will also stay on as needed to answer questions and take your recommendations for emergency drills or other program related concerns.

Session Description: Dr. Gibbs provides an overview of Trauma Informed Care and introduce the ACTION from Trauma Approach. The approach maps out neurological connections to further enhance understanding of the underlying mechanisms influencing behavior following exposure to trauma. The ACTION from Trauma Approach also reviews activities and worksheets to assist clients in creating growth plans and provides tools to assess and address how trauma presents within organizations and social constructs. Dr. Gibbs instructs participants on how to perform specific treatment techniques and strategies including physical activities, breathwork, self-regulation, and activities to address cultural safety based on the ACTION from Trauma Approach.

Session Description: The Segmental Assessment of Trunk Control (SATCo) is the only current measure that determines the stability of discrete levels of trunk control in children with motor disabilities. This ECHO TIES session will provide a brief overview of the SATCo and the application of strategies to assist with positioning for improved postural control and participation during family and school routines and learning activities. We will share a recent case study showing SATCo administration followed by immediate changes in function when segmental support was provided to the child’s positioning devices.

Session Description: This session is designed to be a “show and tell” of tools made from the Practical Versatile and Cheap Assistive Technology Supports handbook and enhanced with items found at home or the Dollar Store, including a tilting eye gaze frame, switch holders, a number line manipulative, a toy corral, an adjustable tablet holder, a sensory table and more. PVC comes apart easily and can be reassembled for positioning, play, and learning supports. It is simple to assemble an inexpensive make-it take-it kit for home, in the office, or in the car to have the needed supplies to create low-tech AT or an adaptation wherever it is needed. Participants will have the opportunity to see examples as well as brainstorm additional ideas and solutions.
