La Tour Eiffel

The Eiffel Tower

Basic Information:

"La Tour Eiffel" is 1,052 feet high, made of iron, and is located in Paris, France on the Champ de Mars. Construction on "La Tour Eiffel" began on Januray 28, 1887 and ended in 1889. It was actually built for the Paris Exposition of 1889, which was the World Fair, much like a state fair. 700 proposals were submitted in a design competition for the exposition and Alexandre Gustave Eiffel's submission, "La Tour Eiffel", was chosen.
"La Tour Eiffel" is the tallest building in France, and when it was completed, set the record for the tallest building in the world, but The Empire State Building surpassed it in height setting the record at 1, 454 feet. The first floor on the "La Tour Eiffel" is 360 steps from the ground and the second one is 1060 steps from the ground! It received 7 million visitors in 2011 making it the most visited monument in the world.

Completed in May 1889

Going against French Art?

You may think that "La Tour Eiffel" was an instant success, but actually, it expereinced tons of criticism in the beginning. In fact, a 300 name petition was brought to the Paris government in a protest of its construction. The petition read as follows, "We, the writers, painters, sculptors, architects, and lovers of the beauty of Paris, do protest with all our vigour and all our indignation, in the name of French taste and endangered French art and history, against the useless and monstrous Eiffel Tower."

There for more than looks?

"La Tour Eiffel" had a 20-year expiration date and in fact, was almost tore down in 1909. What saved it was an antenna that was placed at the top of the tower, used at the time for telegraphs. In 1918, French Radio took use of it as well as French Television in 1957.

Personally...

I'm happy "La Tour Eiffel" was built. Whenever I think of Paris or even France in general I imagine "La Tour Eiffel." It really was beautifully built and a great national monument for France.
