Dr Reid's Visit
PTSA Fundraising Information
Dear Fernwood Families,
We hope everyone enjoyed their Mid-Winter Break whether you stayed local or traveled. As we return from break, it is encouraging to see and hear that confirmed COVID-19 cases are decreasing within our school, state, and beyond. With this in mind, Washington State has begun to make statements about adjustments to mask policies both indoors and outdoors.
Last night (Monday, Feb. 28th) Dr. Reid sent out a message to families stating that "Effective Tuesday, March 1, 2022, consistent with King County Health Department and State DOH guidance, we will transition to becoming mask-optional for all elementary, middle, and high school students and staff when outdoors on school and District building campuses".
As we make this transition, we want to be mindful that there is a spectrum of feelings and perspectives within our community around the use of masks. We want to maintain a level of respect and a feeling of safety for all along the spectrum. We also want to help students in understanding the new adjustments. In these efforts, we shared the linked video with students today.
Here are a few other details around this transition:
If students choose to take masks off when outdoors, we will encourage them to pull it down or leave it on a lanyard to prevent it from falling on the ground and becoming soiled.
Students may still wear masks outdoors if they prefer. We are communicating that either choice is acceptable as some students may feel more comfortable in a mask for a variety of reasons.
Masks must still be worn indoors unless eating or drinking.
All COVID protocols and guidelines around social distancing remain in place.
Please note that school staff will not be able to provide supervision or accountability for individual students’ mask use outdoors. Please talk to your child about your expectations for their outdoor mask use.
On March 12, the Washington State indoor mask mandate will end. Local governments and schools can make their own decisions. More information will be shared by the Northshore School District prior to March 12. In the meantime, masks are required inside and on school busses.
Our school will continue current health and safety practices, including physical distancing, frequent handwashing, regular and thorough cleaning, and weekly batch testing. We will continue to communicate when there is a positive COVID case at our school.
Please reach out if you have questions. Thank you for your cooperation.
Kate Eicher, Proud Principal
Fernwood Calendar and Dates to Remember
As we enter March, we are very excited to engage with students during our all school virtual assembly, which is scheduled for next week. As shared previously, in January, we had been focused upon envisioning our hopes and dreams for the fair treatment of all people. In February, we had continued this discussion and students had made the connection that we are all better when we work together. In this month’s assembly, we will be focused upon being called to take action and we will discuss how perseverance is needed when faced with such challenges.
We encourage you as a family to engage in a conversation regarding perseverance. As an option, you could take turns, asking and answering each other such questions:
Share about a time you needed to show perseverance. What were the challenges? What support did you have? How did you overcome your challenges?
Think about a challenging circumstance that requires action to overcome. How does using perseverance help us when we take action?
How can we continue to use perseverance this school year?
We trust that these conversations will lead to greater insight into your child’s growth in problem-solving and that your child will also gain insight and learn from your experiences.
And as a related learning opportunity, throughout this month during our morning announcements, we will be highlighting problem-solving when dealing with conflict. At Fernwood, we teach the STEP method, as part of our Second Step curriculum, our core Social-Emotional curriculum. I encourage you to ask your child how they could use STEP (Say the problem, Think of solutions, Explore consequences, and Pick the best solution) when working through a problem at school or at home.
If I can be of any support to your family or your student, please reach out. I strive to partner with families for student support and school success. Please see below for additional and timely resources that you may find helpful.

Student Enrollment for Fall 2022
This is the time of year when we begin making plans for the next school year. One of the many things we look at is enrollment to determine staffing and facility needs. In order to plan effectively for next year, we need to know if families will be leaving Fernwood for the 2021-2022 school year. If your family may be or is moving, please email our secretary, Tracy Bickhaus @ email@example.com to let her know (including where you will or may be moving to).
Individual and Group Picture Day - March 31st
On March 31st, Fernwood will have class and activity pictures taken such as Track and Field, Bad Monkey’s, etc. Students will stand together on risers with their masks on. When the photographer is ready to take the picture, the students will remove their masks. If you do not want your student to participate, please let the office know.
Order envelopes for class pictures and individual pictures will go home the week of March 14th. Reminders from Last Month
SBAC DATES - Students in grades 3rd-5th will take part in our state’s Smarter Balanced Assessment this spring. Fernwood will begin testing after spring break and will wrap up testing during the beginning of June. During our testing window, it is especially important your child is present at school. A specific schedule with testing dates for each grade level will be shared as a part of April’s newsletter.
5th Grade Camp Cedar Springs - Our 5th grade students will have the opportunity to attend in-person camp this year at Cedar Springs. This will be a day camp opportunity versus overnight. Our scheduled dates at this time are April 20th and 21st. We will attend along with Ruby Bridges. This will be a great culminating activity for students at both schools to end their time in elementary together - just like they started. 5th grade teachers will be sharing specific information with families about dates and times.
