RMS Back to School Update
August 7, 2020
We're Getting Ready!
Hope everyone has had a chance to relax and catch their breath a little bit over the last few months. We have certainly been busy here at RMS, getting ready for the start of the year. Next week, teachers will be engaged in a variety of learning opportunities to provide the best experience possible for our students. I've included a number of important updates in the sections below, thanks for taking the time to check them out.
Below is the learning schedule we will follow beginning on August 24th and continuing for the first quarter for all students, both in the Virtual Academy and learning in the In-Person Distance model.
- Each day provides guaranteed opportunities to connect with their homeroom teacher and their teacher from each of their courses.
- Students will not be asked or expected to spend their entire day in front of their Chromebook. Rather, we will strive to provide as many non-tech opportunities as possible throughout the curriculum.
- Students will have each of the four core classes (Social Studies, Science, ELA, Math) in addition to a period for PE/Health and a rotating elective period or year long music course.
- We hope to finalize and share homeroom teacher assignments by the end of next week.
- Gifted programming is still being determined, but will be offered to qualifying students.
Getting the Year Started!
We typically host an Open House/Meet the Teacher Night during the first full week of school so that parents and teachers get a chance to connect and put a face with a name. This year, our homeroom teachers will be reaching out to connect and hopefully schedule a Google Meet session with you and your child to talk and get to know each other a little bit. Stay tuned for more details.
6th Grade "Orientation"
We also typically host a full day 6th grade orientation the day before school begins so that our newest students feel comfortable coming into the building. This year, our 6th graders will start the school year on August 24th with everyone else. Near the end of the first week, our 8th grade mentors (we call the WEB Leaders) will be connecting online to welcome our 6th graders and help them make their way through the year.
We are limiting the supplies that we are asking families to provide for this year. For now, all we ask is that students have a space to work and have paper or notebook and pen or pencil available with their Chromebook. I would also recommend that they have headphones to use with their chromebook. When students return to school, we will ask them to have headphones, a water bottle, and a mask each day. We'll be providing each student with one mask when that time comes.
New or Broken Chromebook Pickup/Echange
Our Technology Department will be hosting a Chromebook pickup/exchange for students in grades 6-12 that are new to Affton and for students with Chromebooks that are broken/not working. No appointment is necessary.
Where: Affton High School
When: Monday, August 17th from 3:00-6:00 PM
7th Grade Chromebook Exchange
Typically, we have our 6th graders trade in their Chromebooks for new ones as they move into 7th grade. With so many districts purchasing devices this past spring and summer, our new Chromebooks were delayed. We expect them sometime in September and will set up an exchange when they arrive.
2020-2021 Online Registration
The online registration process must be completed for all students returning to the Affton School District for the 2020-2021 school year. (The online process does not always work well on cell phones. We recommend using a computer or tablet (student chromebooks work well).
Families of RETURNING students: Please log onto the Parent Portal to register returning students for the 2020-2021 school year.
