Words Their Way
Words Their Way is a foundational program that helps students develop those foundational skills targeted in the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Specifically, Words Their Way supports the CCSS’s Reading Foundational Skills and Language Standards in Grades K–5. The depth and breadth of word knowledge developed through the Words Their Way approach to word study also supports the Common Core’s emphasis on students’ reading more complex literary and informational texts.
Words Their Way believes that the hands-on word sorting approach to word study is invaluable to you and your students. Broaden your word study understanding and instruction with this expanded word sorting tool for week by week implementation with Letter Name-Alphabetic spellers (Grades K - 3).
Designed to help teachers working with transitional readers in the within word pattern stage of spelling development (Grades 1 — 4), the sorts in this companion volume help students begin contrasting long and short vowels and sorting words by grammatical and semantic features. The book begins by reexamining short- and long-vowel sounds with picture sorts, moving on to word sorts to thoroughly examine vowel patterns and assess students’ understanding of short- and long-vowel patterns. The text moves on to diphthongs and other ambiguous vowel sounds, and finally to complex consonants and consonant clusters, contractions, inflectional endings and homophones.
