Essential Instructional Practice #5: Explicit Instruction in Letter-Sound Relationships
The role that phonics plays in reading development has been a hot topic for a very long time. Below, you will find a little bit of information that details this section of the K-3 Literacy Essentials, supporting information, and links to videos in Michigan classrooms. Crucial conversations to have include: how high frequency word instruction and practice connects to text, how we vary instruction to use multiple channels, precision of teacher language, and how teachers connect letter-sound instruction to the prompting used in small group or individual reading instruction.
