Data Confirmation: Due 9/1
Dear Prairie Families,
Thank you to our students and families who participated last week in our Spirit Days for Puma Kick Off Week. It was a success! Classrooms spent the week establishing behavior expectations and routines.
You are all invited to our Back-to-School Night on Wednesday, August 31st from 5:00-6:30. Come meet the teachers and learn important information to help your student have a successful year. We will have booths for PTA membership, Aeries Data Confirmation, Girls on the Run, School Site Council and more. We will have prizes and a raffles for families who sign up for PTA and complete the data confirmation process. If possible, it is best to leave students at home. We expect to see you all there!

We are looking for a few dedicated community members to lead our Parent-Teacher Association. PTA brings crucial programs to Prairie for our students. Last year, PTA brought the student store. This year, we hope to return to family events, such as the Harvest Festival but, we cannot do it without a PTA board! We need a President, Treasurer & Secretary. Sign up at Back-to-School Night, or reach out to Mrs. Schevenin for more information. firstname.lastname@example.org.
We are excited to offer a series of parent workshops this year. There are 8 sessions total. On Wednesday, we will be holding Session 1 Prairie from 6:30-8:30. All parents and guardians are invited. See more information below.
We are bringing Girls on the Run (3rd-5th) and Heart & Sole (6th) to Prairie! These are after-school youth development programs for girls in 3rd through 6th grade. Practices will be on Tuesday and Thursday, 3:00-4:30. The programs culminate with a 5K run on Sunday, November 13th at Inderkum High School. See the newsletter for more information. Go to http://www.gotrsac.org to register.
5th and 6th graders have until September 2nd to sign up to play a musical instrument. The sign up link is included below.

6th Grade Science Camp COMING SOON
Our 6th Grade students will be attending a 4-day residential environmental education program at Exploring New Horizons Outdoor Schools at Sempervirens in Scotts Valley, November 1-4, 2022.
Naturalists lead students in hands-on, place-based learning, concentrating on interdependence, cycles, energy flow, natural history, and more, deepening students’ ecological knowledge and interest in science and environmental stewardship. School groups also engage in cooperative team building activities, including family style dining, designed to build trust within and between the hiking groups and participating classes or schools. Learnings are reinforced through reflective nature journaling; drawing or nature art; participatory group songs, dances, and skits where cabin groups act out a concept they have learned during the week. Conservation is also an essential part of the experience, as students weigh and graph their food waste at the end of each meal, try to take a 3-minute shower, and participate in a mock town hall meeting.
6th Grade teachers will be sharing more information this week at Back-to-School Night.
Welcome to Our New PE Teacher
Hi! My name is Casey Avalos (Coach Casey). This will be my 23rd year teaching in WJUSD. For the last 7 years I have been a classroom teacher at Tafoya in 1st and 2nd grade. Before that, I taught here at Prairie for 15 years and even did my student teaching here! I am excited to be back! I live in Davis with my husband and my 16 year old daughter. My other children have already moved out, but live close by. I spend my spare time traveling for soccer with my daughter, playing with my dogs and renovating our older home. I look forward to meeting the Prairie staff and families.
