Reminders: Illnesses & COVID Protocol
A few important reminders about what to do if your child has an illness:
- Please keep children home if they are experiencing fever, vomiting, or diarrhea.
- Students need to remain home until their symptoms improve and they are fever-free (without needing fever-reducing meds) for 24 hours.
- Please call the front office to let us know your child will be absent. Sending an excuse note when they return is also suggested.
- Please DO send your child to school every day unless they are sick.
Additionally, we are beginning to see an uptick in Covid cases. AISD's current policy on Covid:
"After testing positive, you need to wait five days before returning to school (the day you tested positive is Day 0). Anyone who tested positive will need markedly improved symptoms and to be fever-free for 24 hours before returning. Students or staff who return to campus on the sixth day after a positive result will be required to mask for five more calendar days."
This is a Big Deal ---School Starting Time
Reminder: School doors open at 7:15. At 7:35, students are dismissed to classrooms. At 7:40, our academic day begins. Please strongly consider arriving at school no later than 7:35 to give your child a few minutes to transition to their learning environment and participate in morning meeting time. We will start issuing tardy slips at the front door at 7:40am. If you are wanting breakfast for your child, please arrive at 7:15.
Monthly Safety Drills
- We are required to do 1-2 safety drills every month to help us all be prepared in case of various emergencies. These drills are very calm and are announced as practice drills.
- Please review this handout for more information on the drills.
CATCH has started.
Coordinated Approach To Child's Health kicks off this week.
Coordinated School Health (CSH) is a cooperative approach to improve the physical, mental, and emotional health for all students, staff, and members of the educational community. Essential district programs such as Health and Physical Education, Nutrition and Food Services, Health Services, Social and Emotional Learning and Cultural Proficiency and Inclusiveness, Staff Wellness, and Family and Community Engagement work together to provide services, promote skills, and establish healthy environments and behaviors designed to last a lifetime.

HB 3
With recent changes from the legislature, there are understandably more questions about how safety is being handled on our campus. Last spring, the Texas Legislature passed a new law, HB 3, requiring all Texas school districts to have at least one armed security officer at every campus during school hours. Austin ISD is NOT considering arming teachers or other district employees outside of Austin ISD Police Department to comply with the law. AISD is planning to hire more than 70 new SRO’s to cover all 78 elementary campuses, plus associated support staff, to meet the new requirements. The board is finalizing these plans at their August meeting. When I know more specifics regarding personnel and scheduling for Maplewood, I will share this with our community.
