Children's Book Project

When due:

Friday, May 19th, 8-10am

Mrs. Elzner's Room

This MUST be turned in on or before this date.

Why?

Prediction is an early part of children's reading skills- they learn patterns, which in turn helps them identify theme, conflicts, motivation, etc.

It also helps them with prediction skills-- when they begin to realize what may happen next, they also begin to internalize the story.

Your Assignment:

You will write, illustrate, and present an original children’s book. One of the most important features of this assignment is the pictures because they clue the readers in on the meanings of the words

Examples of the types of book you may write:

  • Rewrite a fairy tale with a twist or in modern day- choose a fairy tale and “revamp” it by having modern day characters, or a twist at the end. You could even do something from Mythology!

  • Rhyming book- write an original story, making sure there is a rhyming pattern

  • Building book- “If you give a mouse a cookie…” Each page must build on the next page, and eventually come back around to the

  • beginning.

  • Repeating book- where one particular line repeats over and over from each page to the next. (Sometimes this is combined with Rhyming book)

  • Moral story- a story with a lesson; usually serious and meant to help children cope with certain situations or events (losing loved one or pet, storms, the dark, etc.); told so that kids can understand.

  • Hero's Journey-- where the character (hero) must go on a journey/quest to rescue someone/something, and encounters obstacles along the way (think Finding Nemo).

  • With each one, there needs to be a lesson that can be learned.

Requirements:

  • The entire book, from the title page to the last page, will be done on the computer using some type of multimedia program- Google Slides, Docs, StoryJumper, etc.

  • IF you do not have a computer, or choose to do your own on paper, ALL pictures will have to be hand drawn and colored, or printed (remember-- I cannot print for you at school so you will have to make arrangements to print any pics you need)

  • The MINIMUM font size is 24 (no smaller)

  • No cursive-syle, Old English, Ravie, or any other font styles that do not show proper formation of letters to Kindergarteners, or are things they have not yet learned.

  • A MINIMUM of TEN (10) pages in length.

  • Must be pre-approved by the teacher.

  • Big, bright, colorful pictures.

MUST NOT SCARE LITTLE KIDS OR UPSET THEM IN ANY WAY. MUST BE SCHOOL AND KINDERGARTEN APPROPRIATE. WHEN IN DOUBT, ASK OR SIMPLY DON’T PUT IT IN THERE!

USE SPELL CHECK!! Everything must be spelled correctly.

Grading:

2 TEST GRADES- Multimedia Presentation OR handwritten book AND presentation

1 DAILY GRADES- 2 for planning/participation
