Change in Mask Mandate
Governor Ducey recently issued Executive Order 2021-10 which changed face mask requirements in schools. We will continue to keep all mitigation measures in place, including wearing masks, handwashing, cleaning and maintaining school and district buildings, social distancing as much as possible, and providing contact tracing for those who may have been exposed to an infected person. Due to the impending increase in temperatures, we will be making one minor adjustment to our plan which is the following:
An individual student or staff member has the option to wear or not wear a face mask during all recess activities and during P.E., when this class occurs outside. Recess activity is defined as lunch recess and the K-5 second recess that is outlined in the master schedule.
Students may ask for masks breaks as needed.

Calling all Next Year's Kindergarteners
We are now enrolling kindergarten students for students who turn 5 years old by August 31, 2021 for the 2021-22 school year! Deer Valley Unified School District also has Early Kindergarten Entry testing, please see information below or click on this link: Kindergarten / Early Entry Kindergarten (dvusd.org). Please stop by the office anytime during normal hours of 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to pick up a registration packet from Kara or Lisa. Meet the principal and take a school tour: https://youtu.be/3bVxzwPfzc4 Meet Mrs. Martin a kindergarten teacher and learn about the classroom: https://youtu.be/UHgdEmvIqsQ
Children who turn 5 between September 1 and December 31, 2021 may be assessed to determine readiness for early entrance into kindergarten. The intent of early entrance is to identify highly capable children who miss the regular September 1 cutoff for kindergarten entrance. Early entry is specifically geared for children whose curriculum achievement level far exceeds the norm. In order to be considered for the early entrance acceptance, the child must exhibit advanced skills in language arts, mathematics, and in social, emotional, and motor development as measured by tests administered by the Deer Valley Unified School District. Log onto https://www.dvusd.org/Page/30453 for more information.

DVUSD Families! You can now enroll online!
This is an exciting time for DVUSD as we transition to a more formalized online student record system. From the DVUSD website, parents will now be able to submit online registrations for their new to the district students and upload the necessary supporting documents. Later this summer, parents of returning students will be able to electronically verify current medical and emergency contact information and update any changes for their student(s) that are currently enrolled. In order to access these important yearly documents, parents will have to have a PowerSchool Parent account set up. ALL PARENTS who HAVE NOT already created a PowerSchool Parent account, NEED TO DO SO ASAP! This electronic process will replace some of the paperwork that we send home on the first few days of school. We will be emailing PowerSchool Parent Account setup instructions. If you need help after receiving the set up instructions or would like to request the instructions, please contact your school’s office staff at 623-376-3500 or registrar at Kara.Knorr@dvusd.org.
All Things EQ Message
Our final motto for this school year is: I learn more by truly listening to others.
I once had a relative complain to me about how kids today (which meant my kids) spend too much time on their phones and don't interact with other people enough. I was frustrated by the comment because I had permitted my children to go on their phones only after they had done a solid hour of visiting.
Then it hit me! Their "visiting" was just a polite physical presence. They appeared to be listening, but truthfully, they were zoning out. While I was impressed with how well they sat quietly when bored because it was an act of respect, I knew we could do better!
Listening is an essential part of any conversation, and strong conversation skills are an asset in life. However, telling our kids to listen is not as helpful as providing a framework for them to practice their communication skills.
I love the Ask 3 & Tell 3 tool and share it each year. You simply ask your children to share three things about themselves and to learn three things about the person they are speaking with when you have friends or family over. This practical tool helps your children interact with others, and summertime is the perfect opportunity.
When I first started Ask 3 & Tell 3 with my kids, they rolled their eyes at me, and I recall bribing them the first time with a promise of Dairy Queen if they could tell me three facts about each person. However, it worked, and they began interacting more! Not only did this help them improve their communication skills, but it also helped them forge stronger bonds with family, friends, and relatives.
Raising children isn't easy. We are all doing the best we can, and I want to thank you for being part of a community where we support one another and bring the best of all of us to our kids!
Until next year,
Danna Evans
