Dear Everitt Families,
Thank you for your continued support and patience as we work through constantly changing circumstances and sets of information to plan for this coming school year. As we work through the challenges of meeting state regulations, district guidelines and the needs of our staff and students, it feels a little bit like we are building three schools at the same time. Please know that as we do, we keep our community's health and safety as our most important responsibility while committing to creating as rich and engaging learning experiences for our students as we possibly can.
There is some updated information about student schedules in the section below titled "Restart Updates." You will also notice that there are new specific sections for our GT Center families and our DH/H and DH/H+ families. If you have questions or concerns about the information shared below, don't hesitate to call or write. I'm always excited to talk to you.
In closing, I just want to take a moment to express my gratitude and my deep respect for the faculty and staff of Everitt. Many of them are anxious about returning to work, partly because they understandably fear for their own health, the health of their families and the health of the students they love; and partly because we, like you, are struggling with the fear of the unknown and uncharted. This is unlike any school year any of us has ever faced, and we are solving problems none of us has ever grappled with, and this group of extraordinary professionals have been resilient, kind, empathetic, supportive and thoughtful advocates for each other and for students. I am truly lucky to get to know them and work with them.
I am so grateful to get to be a part of this extraordinary community, and I thank you for sharing your kids with us; it is our honor to serve them.

Restart Updates
As we gathered your survey feedback regarding your learning preferences, and as we learned how many of our staff members needed a remote assignment in order to keep them and their families safe, we realized that having students take all seven classes all year would not be safely possible, as several sections became too full for us to space students appropriately in our classrooms. Furthermore, we worried that in this model, our hybrid learners would only see each of their teachers once per week.
Therefore, with the help of our staff leadership team, we designed a quarter schedule that is different from our typical semester schedule. In the first and third quarter, students will attend English Language Arts (Reading and Writing combined); Math; Science OR Social Studies and one of their electives; in the second and fourth quarters, they will attend English Language Arts (Reading and Writing combined); Math; Science OR Social Studies (the opposite of what they have first and third quarter); and another elective. (A picture of this schedule and further details are below.) The quarter schedule will apply to both hybrid and remote learners.
There are many benefits to a quarter schedule this year. First and foremost, we are committed to the health and wellness of our students and staff. Also, after witnessing our students take six and seven courses online last spring, we felt the experience was incredibly challenging for many reasons. For students to keep track of 7 classes at a time while learning new organizational systems and platforms in the online environment proved overwhelming, thus impacting their overall engagement and learning. Focusing on four classes at a time is much more manageable and meaningful for 8 to 9 weeks.
As an added benefit, teachers will have fewer students to support therefore students will have better opportunities to connect with them. And from a health and safety standpoint, the quarter system will cut down on in-person contacts per day versus a rotating 7 block schedule.
Finally, interacting with the same teacher in person twice a week will help build classroom culture and improve learning opportunities.
