SCIS Principal Newsletter
March 30, 2023
Hello Sloan Creek Families!
I hope everyone has had a fantastic week. We kicked off our week having one of our awesome students say the pledge at the board meeting (picture below). We also honored two of our staff members for Heart of a Teacher and Heart of Support. Tomorrow, we have Coffee with Principals where we will be discussing recent benchmark testing, STAAR testing, end of year activities and events to begin the fall semester (can't believe we are already talking about next year).
6th grade parents-Please scroll down and look at the information regarding the Catch My Breath program. Our school marshall does an incredible job teaching this important information to our 6th grade students. You will need to opt out of this program if you do not want your child to participate.
Lastly, the student council is collecting items to fill homeless care packages for children. Items needed are children's toothbrushes, toothpaste, coloring books and small packs of crayons. Donations will be accepted through April 14th. The grade level with the most donations will get to eat outside during lunch.
I hope everyone has a great weekend.
Lovejoy Proud,
Courtney Halpin

Attendance Information
Attendance continues to be a top priority for Lovejoy ISD. It should come as no surprise that attendance has a direct relationship with student learning. Additionally, public school funding is provided by the State of Texas based on each district's average daily attendance (ADA).
Lovejoy has developed an Attendance Task Force consisting of staff, parents, and students to formulate ideas about how to positively impact ADA in our district. One suggestion is to update the community via weekly principal communication on the number of absences each campus has accrued YTD along with the budgetary impact of those absences.

2022-2023 SCIS Yearbook-LAST DAY TO ORDER IS 4/2/2023!!!!!!

CATCH My Breath-6th Grade Students ONLY!
6th Grade Parents,
Officer Jacquez plans to teach the lessons April 10-14. Please fill out the form to let us know if you would or would not like your child to participate in the "Catch My Breath" program during their scheduled PE class. If you choose to have your child not participate, they will be placed in another class during that time. Please Click Here to respond by April 5th.

Spinal Screening-5th Grade Girls ONLY!!!
Dear Parents/Guardians of 5th grade girls:
Our school will do spinal screenings April 10-14, 2023 during your student's PE class.
State law requires that schools must screen students for abnormal spinal curvature in accordance with the following schedule:
• Girls will be screened two times, once at age 10 (grade 5) and again at age 12 (grade 7).
• Boys will be screened one time at age 13 or 14 (grade 8).
Trained screeners will check your child for signs of spinal problems like scoliosis. Catching a spinal problem early can make the treatment much easier. Not treating spinal problems can lead to serious health problems. The screening is simple. Screeners will look at your child’s back while he or she stands and bends forward.
Important Recommendations:
• Students should bring shorts to school for the exam.
• Girls should wear a thin t-shirt or a sports bra or a two-piece swimsuit top underneath their shirt on exam day.
• If girls are wearing a sports bra or a two-piece swimsuit top underneath their shirt, it is recommended they remove their shirt for the screening.
• The girls will be screened separately and one at a time with 2 female screeners present.
The school will send you a letter if your child does NOT pass the screening. The letter will tell you how to follow up with a doctor. This screening is not a medical exam. Your child still needs to see a doctor for checkups.
If you do not wish to have your child screened for any reason, you must notify the nurse through email, no later than Friday, 4/7/2023 by 3:00pm.
Thank you for your cooperation.
