Announcements
Welcome back! I hope everyone had a nice Holiday and New Year! This week, we will review our school and classroom rules and procedures. The students will also make New Year's resolutions. This semester, we will focus on establishing independence in work and problem - solving as the student move closer to second grade. Today, your child will bring home their red Homework folder with only Language Arts and Math homework. As always, the Homework folder is due back on Thursday. We will resume with spelling next week. This week in spelling, we will review short and long vowel sounds and blends.
Reader's and Writer's Workshop
We will be participating in an author study this week. Each day, we will read a book by Jan Brett and complete creative activities with each book. Our Reader's Workshop will focus on characters. We will analyze characters in stories to help us better understand the character and the story. In Writer's Workshop, we will look at authors as mentors. In other words, we will read stories by authors such as Angela Johnson, Kevin Henkes, and Mercer Mayer to learn "how" they write and transfer some of their techniques to our stories.
Math
In math, we will focus on 2-D and 3-D shapes. We will examine and compare attributes of 2-D plane and dimensional shapes. This week, the students will use pattern shapes to create symmetrical snowflakes. We will learn about shapes using some creative activities! As you are out and about with your child, try finding shapes in our world.
