Stanford Testing is in Full Swing

Each morning of this week will follow the same schedule, so please make sure your children get plenty of rest and eat a healthy breakfast. Our last day of testing will be next Monday, April 18th. In the event of absences, we will have make -up tests next Tuesday and Wednesday. The subtests given each day are as follows:
Tuesday: Vocabulary; Math Procedures
Wednesday: Reading Comprehension
Thursday: Math Problem Solving
Friday: Language; Spelling
Monday: Social Science; Science
A Picnic in the Park after Stanfords
As promised, we have rescheduled our City Park picnic for Thursday, April 21st. We will have finished our Stanfords, and we'll be excited to spend a day in the sunshine at City Park. Our plan is to leave school at 10:15 and head for Wheel Fun Rentals to take part in a Surrey Scavenger Hunt throughout City Park. We will then head over to the picnic area, located on the left side of the amusement park area, for a brown bag picnic lunch. Students should plan to bring their own lunch from home, or if they have a lunch card, they may request a bag lunch from school. All parents are invited to join in on the fun. We will return to school by 2:00 p.m. for our afternoon classes.
Author's Visit with William Joyce
On Monday afternoon, our students had the pleasure of attending a special assembly with visiting author, William Joyce. Mr. Joyce is from Shreveport, LA. He is a writer, illustrator, filmmaker, and 2015 Academy Award winner for Best Animated Short Film.
The fourth graders enjoyed hearing about Mr. Joyce's childhood and the first book he wrote when he was in fourth grade. He has now written over 50 books, including The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, The Guardians of Childhood, and his newest book, Ollie's Odyssey, an adventure of valor, friendship, and a look into the mysterious world of favorite toys.

Congratulations Math Olympiads!
Last Saturday, St.George's Math Olympiad students competed in a tournament at Country Day school. St. George's had three teams competing, each made up of five 4th -6th graders. We are very proud of each of our students who qualified to compete in this year's tournament, including 4th graders: Pete Metzinger, Roya Brinkman, Ben Kornman, Paolo Guillen, and Zach Spangler. We would like to congratulate all our players on a job well done and send a special shout out to team members, Pete, Roya, and Ben, who together with middle school students, Andrew Schafer and James ZInk, came in 2nd place in the tournament. Way to go, fourth graders!
Planning Ahead for the Fourth Grade Challenge - Learning the 50 States and Capitals
Each year, the fourth graders learn the names and locations of the fifty states and their capitals. We are learning the states and capitals by region, and last week we took our first quiz on the twelve states in the Southeastern region. This quiz was sent home in the students' weekly folders. Please keep it, as well as future quizzes, to help your child to use as a review as we learn more states. During the last week of school, all fourth graders will be given a test where they will be expected to identify and label all fifty states and their capitals. This is known as the Fourth Grade Challenge.
Way to go, Dragons!
Last week, St.George's offered a volleyball clinic to 4th -7th grade girls. This is the first time fourth graders have been able to participate. We had four 4th grade girls sign up, and the girls have had a great time playing with the older students. Today, we had two former college volleyball players and coaches come to the clinic to offer more insight into the game. We hope to have more of our girls join the team next year. Way to go Madden, Elisabeth, Gloria, and Sierra.
