Hour of Code 2015 @ Titan Hill
#hoc
We are quickly approaching Computer Education Week, a week dedicated to introducing students to coding and programming. The Hour of Code, sponsored by Code.org, is a promotion during that week to get all kids to spend at least one hour practicing coding through games and activities. Especially in our area, jobs the require programming and/or coding skills are in high demand. Last year, a parent in Tina O'Donnell's room came in during their Hour of Code and mentioned how her job is around programming the card scanners you use to pay for things at retailers. Both secondary schools are looking at where they can include classes related to programming and coding.
What Lynn & I are asking of you is to set aside one hour to participate in the Hour of Code sometime between Monday, December 7 and Tuesday, Dec 22. If you are fine with doing this with your class on your own, great. You are welcome to turn your kids loose on the LC Hour of Code Resources Symbaloo if you’d like. Students can get there by going to bit.ly/lccode or finding the link on the Titan Hill webmix. If you would like Lynn and/or I to be in your classroom when you do this, please click here and sign up for a spot. We are more than happy to facilitate kids getting to the website and exploring some different activities.
Much like last year, Lynn would like to celebrate all the classes that participate with a certificate and class picture. If you celebrate on your own, Lynn will contact you to get a quick class picture!
I have updated the Symbaloo with links to activities. You can use the picture below to see how the items are grouped together. This is the same site that Lynn and I will use if we do this with your students. I would recommend having your students focus on the “easier” links near the top. The new ones this year from Code.org are Star Wars and Minecraft-themed activities. They still have the Frozen and Angry Birds activities that kids enjoyed last year. I’m also hoping that Google updates their “Code the Tree” event they had last year.
Thank you for your time over the next month to let your kids explore coding! Please let Lynn or I know if you have questions.
