RMCS Physical Education News and Views “It’s not just a class, It’s a way of LIFE!!”
It is hard to believe that this will be the last PE newsletter of the year. It seems like just yesterday that we were coming back from summer vacation. This newsletter will be short on opinion and long on timelines and dates that are very important for RMCS PE.
For the first time in 3 years, I will be able to offer our annual and traditional end of the year PE celebration called Field Days. We do 6 Field Days, one for every grade level. Classes come out for 2 hours of movement fun! Some of the events are things we have done in PE and others are classic fun Field Day events. We also have included a lot of water events so that kids can do activities and cool off at the same time.
Below is a list of Field Days for 2022:
AM session - 9 -11 AM - (unless otherwise indicated.)
PM session - 12:15 -2:15 PM - ( Unless otherwise indicated)
Friday, June 3rd - AM - 2nd grade PM - Kindergarten (*starts at 12 noon)
Monday, June 6th - AM - 1st grade PM - 4th grade
Tuesday, June 7th - AM - 3rd grade PM - 5th grade
Wednesday/Thursday - June 8th and 9th - RAIN DATES
**Your RMCS student needs the following for Field Days: 1) swimsuit under clothes ( We have a lot of water events.) 2) Towel to sit on and/or dry off with, 3) sunscreen 4) water to drink 5) a water/squirt bottle for our Grand Finale - the Water Bottle Battle. 6) **VERY IMPORTANT - Please have kids wear sneakers or slip ons. We have had problems in the past if kids go barefoot or wear sandals with bees, rocks, and sticks in our area.
**All students will receive a traditional Field Day prize that will help them to stay active during the summer and beyond.
**BIG favor to ask - We ALWAYS need parent helpers for each grade level for Field Days. The “work” is fun and it really helps “Mr. Field Day” - a lot. The more parents we have, the smoother Field Days go!! If you can help, it would be greatly appreciated. You can contact Erin Sutherland and the PTO and let them know you can come and help with your child’s/children’s Field Day. Thank you in advance for your help.
**PLEASE email me with any questions about Field Days - dday@sbschools.net.
I am very excited to be offering Field Days again!!! If you had FUN, you WON!!

Another item that I returned to in PE was doing a gross motor assessment for all RMCS students in grades K-2. I call it the “scary, scary” test but it is not really scary. The skills I assess are the building blocks for everything we do in PE. I assess the following 8 skills: running, galloping, sliding (sideways), hopping, jumping, skipping, and 2 object control skills - overhand throw and catching. Students receive either a 1 if they do the part of the skill listed, and a 0 if they do not. Kindergartners usually score about half of the test as a “1”, first graders usually score a “1” on 75% of the test and second graders usually get a perfect score or miss one or two items. The test helps me out in three ways: 1) It lets me know how each individual child is progressing, 2) I have 3 years of recorded data by the time kids are in 2nd grade, and 3) It lets me know what skills I need to teach more and what skills it seems I have done a good job with. For example, this year, kids are showing great catching skills but are struggling with the overhand throw. So next year, I hope to spend more time on the overhand throw. If you would like a copy of your child’s Test of Gross Motor Development, please email me and I will send it home with your child.
Every summer for the last 15 years, I have offered 2 week long summer camps. It is called Mr. Day’s Dazzling Days of Summer. We go hiking, swimming, play a lot of games, and visit a lot of recreational areas in Chittenden County. We also end each week with a trip to the Smuggler’s Notch Water Park. The two weeks for the camp this year are: June 20-24 and July 11-15. This year, through word of mouth and returning campers, the July camp is already filled with 26 campers!! I do have room, however, in the first week of summer camp. If you are interested, please email me and I can give you more information on the camps like cost and who else is in the camp, etc. I can also give you names of families who have done my summer camps last summer and can let you know all about it.
Hey - that’s it, I think. This newsletter comes at the end of my 31st year at RMCS PE. Whew - I am getting old!! But there is more fun, movement, and learning for next year!! Until then, I hope to see some of you at Field Days. If not, please have a HEALTHY, ACTIVE, and FUN summer!!
Your PE teacher - Mr. “Field” Day

~TICKS IN VERMONT~
This week's focus: Tick Removal REMOVE the tick as soon as you can. Risk for disease is greatly reduced if removed promptly. Avoid using a hot match, petroleum jelly or nail polish to remove a tick. Stick with the above method. Per the CDC, tick testing, for evidence of infection, is not recommended. ~CHECK OUT THESE RESOURCES~
Use the CDC's interactive tool: TICK BITE BOT which assists with tick removal and helping to determine if further care may be necessary. For a terrific TICK REMOVAL VIDEO: watch it here.
Watch for symptoms (any type of rash or flu-like symptoms) for the next 3-30 days. Contact your medical provider if symptoms occur and inform them of the date and location of the bite.
For more information, visit the Vermont Department of Health or the CDC. Next week's topic: Transmission ~COVID INFORMATION~ FREE LAMP tests (similar to PCR, but results within 30 minutes) are available from the Health Department as are antigen and PCR tests, through the end of June. Find sites here (walk-ins allowed) or make an appointment here for pick-up. FREE Rapid Antigen tests are available from the school. Please contact us and we can send them home with your student or you can pick them up at school. With symptoms, if the first antigen test is negative, use the second at least 24 hours later. If they are both negative, and you still have concerns, get a LAMP or a PCR test. Please keep sick kids home.

Welcome to the Two New Assistant Principals at the Three Elementary Schools
Mrs. Stephanie Sumner
I am currently serving in my seventh year as the PK-4 Instructional Leader and Co-Principal at Charlotte Central School. I grew up on a dairy farm in West Haven, Vermont and had a truly rural Vermont K-8 educational experience in a two-room (sometimes 3) multi-age school. In this setting, I had early opportunities to be a teacher and a learner at the same time, which fueled my early passion for becoming an educator. I received my B.S in Elementary Education and B.A. in Psychology from the University of Vermont, an M.Ed. in Science Education through Vermont Science Initiative/Johnson State College and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Educational Leadership from St. Michael’s College. I was a member of the 2020 cohort of the Vermont School Leadership Project, sponsored by the Snelling Center for Government. I am most inspired by engaging with students and educators as they make new connections, tackle new challenges and share their gifts with classmates and teachers!
I live in Williston, Vermont with my husband Sandi, and our children Sadie (19) and Jack (15). Outside of work, I treasure spending time with my family, traveling, kayaking, listening to live music whenever possible, reading and working on puzzles.
A quote that has always resonated with me as an educator is from cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead ~ "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." I believe that we get to see this in action every day in our schools and classrooms.

Music and Family Dance at RMCS for Grades 2/3 & 4/5
Dear families of 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th graders,
I am so excited to welcome you all back to our building for some evenings of dancing! As I included in previous newsletters, folk dances are a wonderful way to teach MANY musical skills like beat, rhythm, form and phrasing. They are also a wonderful way to teach social and emotional skills like working together, including everyone, adapting to the needs of others and respectfulness. Students will be demonstrating a selection of the dances that we have worked on throughout the year and then kids will invite families to join in the fun. This is an interactive performance! ALL are welcome to dance! This is not a seated “concert”. This evening is intended to be more of a “welcome back interactive music open house”. The kids and I will be leading the dances and ALL family members are encouraged to jump right in and join the dances. 2nd and 3rd Grades will be dancing Tuesday May 31 from 6:30-7:30. 4th and 5th Grades will be dancing Thursday May 26 from 6:30-7:30. We will meet in the gym at 6:30 where I will give a quick introduction of the plan. We will then get right into the dances! Kids and families do not need to stay the entire time, although you are welcome to! I will cycle through 4-5 dances and repeat them during the hour. If you can’t get there right at 6:30, don’t worry! You can arrive anytime during the hour and jump right into a dance! They are fun and easy to follow!
We hope to see you there!!!
