You're invited to our Practice Leadership Day!

Would you like to be one of our 60 guests to help us practice for our 2017 Leadership Day? We want YOU to come to school on October 24th from 10-11:30am to help us prepare for our big day on October 30th.

This year, we've been selected as a featured Leader in Me school for the Cincinnati Leader in Me Summit. This means that 60 educators who have signed up to visit this 2-day workshop will visit our school as a model of Leader in Me implementation on October 30th and 31st.

Before we show off our mad leadership skills on the 30th, we need to practice first. That's where you come in. If you can give us 1.5 hours on Tuesday, October 24th, we want you to come help us with our dress rehearsal. You'll be welcomed by our greeters, you'll meet your 4th and 5th grade guides. You'll tour classrooms and see student leadership notebooks and view a Leader in Me lesson. You'll also participate in a leadership expo and a panel discussion with question and answer for teachers and students.

Girls Intramural Instructional Basketball League Events

The first practice night, Monday, October 9, will be a Basketball Camp This will allow us to set a baseline for skill level and game understanding for first time or returning players. During this camp we will evaluate players to help ensure teams will be equitably assigned to the best of our ability, and in consideration of special requests not affecting the overall fairness and quality of play. Please have your player wear basketball/tennis shoes, shorts, and/or comfortable athletic clothing. They will also need to bring a water bottle.

Camp times October 9

  • 3rd Grade - 5pm
  • 4th Grade 6pm
  • 5th Grade 7pm

First organizational meeting is this Tuesday, October 10, 7:00pm, at LES. An adult and the student-athlete are expected to attend. We will share important information and expectations at the meeting.

There will be a $20 per student-athlete participation fee to cover cost of the program. This fee will be collected at the organizational meeting on October 10 along with a participant information sheet, both of which must be paid/provided prior to participation in the first game on October 19.

Habit 4: Think Win-Win

Our students learn the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People in the form of The 7 Habits of Happy Kids. Habit 4 is a really difficult habit to understand and master because it's not compromise, it's a 3rd alternative. In a compromise, either both people in a conflict lose something, or one person loses something. The habit of Think Win-Win encourages those in a conflict to consider a 3rd alternative in which everyone still gets what they want. It also teaches our kids to consider what other people need in order to win and not just focus on what you need to win.

We liked this video that talks about win-win: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U41N02_9zNU

Our teachers are focusing on empowering instruction this year, giving students more control over their learning with strategic coaching, and raising the bar for every student at our school. Whenever you catch something fabulous showing the power of empowering students to lead their own learning, showing the habits at home, or showing the incredible impact the Longhorns have on our community, share it on social media with the hashtag #LonghornsCAN.
