Nurse Notes
May 2019
THANK YOU!
As we come to the end of the school year, it is with great pride that I can look back at the many achievements of the children. They have worked so hard and I know they are looking forward to a fun summer. The many values that have been on display throughout the year have come to mind as we wind down – resilience when tackling a particularly tricky problem whether it is in class or a problem between friends, courage in coping with changes, kindness and honesty towards all members of the school community, appreciation and happiness for each other and all the opportunities they are given within the school - all strengthen their character and their ability to make the most of every aspect of school life.
I would also like to thank all parents and carers for their support this year. A great deal of what I do here cannot be achieved without you and your co-operation and backing.
Finally, I would like to wish all children who are leaving us at the end of this academic year all the very best on their journey. I know they have all had a great start here at Liberty Elementary School and know that they will go on to achieve great things in the future.
Have a wonderful summer break and I look forward to seeing you all again on August 13, 2019.

MEASLES IS STILL ON THE RISE

NATURAL WAYS TO KEEP MOSQUITOS AT BAY THIS SUMMER
There are dozens of kinds of mosquitoes in North America AND they can create big annoyances when you and your family want to enjoy your backyard this summer. Additionally, some mosquitoes carry deadly diseases like West Nile Virus.
Here are several natural ways to keep mosquitos from taking a bite out of summer:
Remove Sources of Stagnant Water
Mosquitoes are drawn to stagnant, still sources of water. They lay their eggs there, and their larvae live in the water until metamorphosis turns them into the flying insects that are the bane of your outdoor picnic. Obvious sources include buckets and empty water pots, but also remove less-than-obvious sources such as bird baths, clogged rain gutters and garden tools such as shovels.
Trim Shrubs
Adult mosquitoes often are attracted by shrubs and other dense foliage, as they like to rest in the cool shade. Regularly trim hedges to let in sun penetration and airflow, which make your landscape less hospitable to these pests.
Battle with Bacteria
If you have bird baths, fountains, garden ponds and similar water features in your landscape that you don't want to dry out to kill the mosquito larvae, consider the bacteria known as Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis. This bacteria is available in numerous over-the-counter sprays and products in many garden stores and nurseries. When added to your water features, the bacteria naturally kills mosquito larvae and thereby effectively breaks the mosquitoes' life cycle.
Plant-Deterrent Vegetation
Some common herbs and plants -- including marigolds, catnip, basil and garlic -- naturally deter mosquitoes and drive them out of your landscape. Their pungent odor helps to mask the odors of mosquito prey, namely you and your family.
Release Beneficial Insects
One reason natural mosquito control is so essential is that the toxic landscape chemicals used to kill mosquitoes also often kill the insects that prey on mosquitoes. Thankfully, many nurseries and garden stores sell these beneficial insects, such as dragonflies and damselflies, which you can release in your backyard to hunt down and kill adult mosquitoes and their waterborne larvae.
