Make-A-Wish Club Raises $10,060 For Make-A-Wish Foundation
On Thursday, April 20, Francis Howell High School (FHHS) celebrated their spring assembly with students and staff. In addition to highlighting the accomplishments of winter and spring sports and activities, it was also an opportunity to focus on the charitable efforts of FHHS.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation was the primary beneficiary of fundraising efforts led by FHHS junior Katya Gehrin, collecting $10,600 to help grant the wish of seventh grader Nathan Hicks, from O’Fallon, Missouri. “We raised enough money to sponsor Nathan and send him to Disneyworld,” said Gehrin. “Years ago, the Make-A-Wish organization changed my life, because my wish was always to get to go to Hawaii, and when I went it was so spectacular. I just wanted to wish it forward for someone else.”
It didn’t matter to these FHHS students that Hicks doesn’t attend any Francis Howell School District (FHSD) schools; they just wanted to help a fellow student in need. Hicks, a student at Wentzville Middle School, was a little overwhelmed by the whole event. “It’s kind of nerve racking, but it’s a lot of fun! Thanks to the students; I’ve met a lot of them, and they’re really good people.”
The FHHS Student Council also raised over $2,000 for Friends of Kids with Cancer, which was great news for the charity, but chilling news for Principal Dr. David Wedlock. “As a result of beating that goal I will be going down into the dunk tank, live on social media! I’m assuming that they’re putting ice cubes in there right now.”
FHHS Activities Director Sean Erwin added, “One of the things we stress is getting involved in the community, and going beyond what we’re doing on the court or on the field to help make the community better. So far this year, we have had 49 different organizations that have benefited from the donations of 1,600 hours and $38,000 from the efforts of our activities groups and sports teams.”
