Ms. Tharp's Recommendations of the Month
Picture Book- True Life Tale
In 2006, inside the National Aquarium of New Zealand, a worker forgot to lock the top of a tank containing Inky the Octopus. After everyone had left for the day, Inky escaped from his tank through a small opening, crossed the floor, slithered through a narrow drain hole (about six inches in diameter) and then jumped into the sea. This story tells the imagined tale of Inky longing for freedom and then making his escape. Recommend age range: K-5.
Realistic Fiction/Narrative Poetry
Garvey is an overweight, lonely boy who loves astronomy, science fiction, and reading. Garvey's father is disappointed that his son is not an athlete, which causes Garvey to feel like a failure. One day Garvey's best (and only) friend encourages him to join the school chorus. Realizing that his voice is a true talent, Garvey's life changes as he begins to accept himself just the way he is. Will his father eventually begin to do the same? Read Garvey's Choice by Nikki Grimes to find out. Recommended for grades 3 and up.
Picture Book- Humor
For those children who enjoyed A Visitor for Bear and A Bedtime for Bear, A Birthday for Bear will not disappoint. In Bonny Becker's third installment, Bear is quite certain that he does not like birthdays, especially his own. However, Mouse is determined that Bear will be celebrating this year and will go through extraordinary lengths to make it happen! Recommended age- K-5.
