KSDE Listening Tour
Kansas Commissioner of Education Dr. Randy Watson is once again facilitating community conversations across the state to gather feedback on the state’s vision for K-12 education.
The Kansans Can Success Tour is a 50-city event that kicks off July 26 in Salina.
Commissioner Watson, Deputy Commissioner Dr. Brad Neuenswander and members of the Kansas State Board of Education will gather community input on the current direction for Kansas K-12 education and share progress made toward achieving the vision established by the Kansas State Board of Education. The 2021 tour is a follow-up to the Kansas Children. Kansas’ Future. community conversations tour that took place in 2015. Using the feedback gathered during that tour, the State Board created a new vision for education: Kansas leads the world in the success of each student. Now, nearly six years later, parents, educators, legislators, school board members, business community members, and all other interested parties are again being asked to lend their voices to the conversation.
All are invited including staff, students and their parents. Your input will continue to help shape Kansas education. Visit Kansans Can Success Tour to download event flyers; a complete list of tour dates and locations; a tour logo; news release and more. Click here for the link: KSDE Listening Tour
Let’s pack the house for Dr. Watson's Listening Tour on September 8, 2021from 1:00 - 2:30 pm at Bishop!

“Kids Ride FREE!” kicks off May 15 at Topeka Metro
Since the summer of 2013, Topeka Metro has offered bus transportation at no cost on all fixed route buses to youth ages 18 and under. Topeka Metro is launching the popular Kids Ride FREE! promotion beginning May 15 through August 15.
"We're pleased to announce that we will be continuing free transportation this summer for young people," said Topeka Metro General Manager Bob Nugent. "We believe when youth ride the bus, it provides them with an essential skill, navigating on their own to their destination and if they don't already ride Topeka Metro, then they become exposed and familiar with public transit."
Kids can ride free to pools, the mall, library and other places in Topeka that are youth friendly. Many of Topeka Metro's routes stop in front of certain locations, and other locations may be just a short walk. Older youth may use the bus to get to and from work or to visit friends or family.
"We have friendly bus operators and customer service to assist someone who may need a little help with where they are going. Our DoubleMap app can be downloaded on a smart phone or is accessible via Topeka Metro's website to see in real-time where each bus is at on route. Our buses are thoroughly sanitized, and parents can be assured their child has a safe way to travel this summer," said Nugent.
Masks are still required when boarding the bus, per federal mandate. Social distancing is mandatory at the bus station and while waiting for the bus in the Quincy Street Station lot. Maps and time points for routes are posted on Topeka Metro's website and in all Topeka Metro shelters. For questions or help with trip planning, call Topeka Metro Customer Service at 785-783-7000 or view the website at topekametro.org.

Do you or someone you know need Mental Health Resources?
I hope you’re all staying healthy and warm these days!
As the pandemic continues to challenge us all, we asked ourselves, “What we could do for Shawnee County students who might be struggling?” As you know, FSGC offers 7 Cups – a free, confidential, safe phone app/website that offers a listening ear and strategies on a range of issues, including anxiety, depression, loneliness and all kinds of stress. It provides one-on-one messaging with a live, trained person available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. We realized we need to make sure teens know this is still available to them if they just need to talk to someone, no matter what the time - day or night.
We have created some a couple of graphics with scannable QR codes for your school staff to use as reminders for students.
If you have teachers who would be willing to show this graphic at the beginning or end of class to remind students help is available to them, that would be absolutely wonderful! The graphic could also be used in announcements, news stories, emailed out to individual students, etc. And I’m sure you can come up with some other unique ways to use the graphic that’s unique to your school/district.
We thank you in advance for helping to keep this valuable, free resource top of mind for your students. We hope you find this to be a helpful tool to add to your toolbox.
As Parent-Teacher Conference time draws near, please let us know if you need any additional brochures, etc. from us. Take good care and try to stay warm!
