Second Presbyterian Monthly Newsletter - April 2020
Diverse. Inclusive. Community. Engaging. Passionate.
FROM YOUR PASTOR
When Sherry, Sadie, Steven Michael and Vince gathered around with Michael Shawgo, Kjirstin Almos, Leslie Deslauriers and myself, we prayed before entering the sanctuary. We acknowledged how singing, preaching and praying in an empty sanctuary would be strained and strange.
Within a few minutes, the familiar feeling of worship came. Soon, the same warmth and intimate feeling of spiritual hope became real; God’s present became real. Adam Deslauriers announced that 45 viewers at home were watching; participating and praying together with us.
Through the immediacy of the internet, we came on to your computer screens and into your homes. You drew near as we drew near. We entered into a time of worship together.
God calls us to be sanctuary for each other. Sanctuary is safe space and sacred space; the place where God chooses to dwell.
In the next few weeks and months, we at Second Presbyterian Church are going to extend the boundaries of sanctuary with each other. Deacons will be reaching out to members and friends with phone calls and e-mails. Copies of sermons and prayers will be mailed out. A phone line has been set up to carry on bible study groups. A Zoom line will allow us to see each other—face to face—and pray together. Elders and Deacons will continue to conduct the holy business of the church. Counseling, pastoral care and prayer will be offered through all these mediums.
Paul could have never imagined the mystical aspects of the church would grow to include our internet connections in this unprecedented time. In the church “we have a building not made with human hands" (2 Corinthians 5 1).
I invite you to reach out to others, to call someone, to connect with church members and friends through all the ways mentioned in this newsletter. Please join us in being sanctuary for each other. “It is God in whom we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28). Our bodies are the temple of God. God’s spirit dwells within us. We are connected to each other by God’s spirit.
In Christ’s peace,
Reverend Dr. David M. Neff
Pastor

MINISTRY IN THE CHURCH CONTINUES
During this time of “Shelter in Place”, the Church has been deemed an “essential service” to the community by the city of Chicago. Office Administrator Ashley McLean is working in the office Tuesday and Fridays; and working from home on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Her projects include promoting the church and increasing the reach of our communication. Sexton Marco Alberto is working Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings and afternoons, working on long overdue cleaning projects. Pastoral Assistant Leslie Deslauriers works in the office on Tuesday and Friday mornings, offering administrative leadership and support, as well as pastoral care for all. Pastor Neff is here Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings to maintain a consistent pastoral presence at the church. He rings the bells daily, prays for members and friends and is available for phone calls and pastoral counseling. Music director Michael Shawgo continues his work as organist and choir director. Keep the staff in your prayers as they seek to accomplish the continuing work of the church!
PRAYERS FOR THE PEOPLE OF GOD IN A TIME OF PANDEMIC
During this time of pandemic and social distancing, members and friends of the church are asked to compose prayers for the people of God. Please send your prayer compositions. We will publish them as they become available.
PRAYER FOR CHILDREN
God of tender and gentle love,
Be with our children in this uncertain time. Grant them your peace through their anxieties or as they encounter the anxiety of those around them. Provide them safe environments and supportive people to care for them in this time. For those children in need of food or shelter, provide for them in their need. Allow children everywhere to find time for play and joy, and assure all children of your continual presence and love for them.
We pray this in Jesus' name, Amen.
PRAYER FOR OUR BODIES
Creator God,
You knit us together in our mothers' wombs and you know every part of our selves. While these bodies are a gift of your creation, we know they can become tired, worn down, weak, and ill. For those of us who are healthy, help us take care of our bodies in this time. For those of us who are sick, bring healing and restoration to our bodies. For those of us who are at higher risk, protect and sustain our bodies. Help all of us to be aware of these bodies you gave us Lord, and to discern what care and attention they need.
In your great and holy name we pray,
Amen.
PRAYER FOR OUR STUDENTS
God of wisdom and power,
Be with students of all ages in this time of disruption. We give you thanks that there are many resources available to educators today, and we give you thanks for the creativity of these educators as they adapt their classrooms. Lord, guide students as they adjust to online and remote forms of education. Support and sustain teachers in this time of alternative learning. Encourage parents and families as they accompany students through this journey. Give peace to those who are anxious and afraid about students' futures, and comfort those who grieve the loss of community that education so often provides.
We pray all of this in Jesus' name, Amen.
PRAYER FOR THE COMMUNITY by Marian Liataud
Gracious God, would you protect the people who live in my building and all the buildings in our South Loop neighborhood? Let our densely populated high-rise buildings be places of health and wellness for all who live and work in them. We're all living side by side, so close and yet unable to interact with each other in person. I'm grateful for walls that keep us safe from germs, but would you continue to break down walls that separate us from each other--race, money, religion, politics? You are at work in the midst of our increasingly restricted lives during this COVID-19 outbreak. Would you unite us in new ways we couldn't have dreamed up in easier times?
For 2nd Presbyterian--may we be a church body that is known for our love for our neighbors in South Loop and beyond. Would you protect those who continue to serve selflessly in our Lunch Bag program to ensure that the under-resourced don't go hungry? Would you let your hand of blessing and provision be on our church even though we can't meet as a congregation in person?
Father God, would you let this pandemic serve to draw people to you--to call out to you when fear and anxiety become unbearable, to ask for your help, to recognize your hand of blessing even in difficult days, to see you in new and significant ways--so that all may believe in you, your son, and your spirit. Draw us together as one body, Lord.

TREASURER'S REPORT
For the year to date to 29 February 2020, on an Operating Basis, the Church had generated an Operating Surplus of $9,494.78, including PILP Loan Repayments of $3,241.89. This compares to a forecast Budget Surplus YTD of $1,057.58. We have recognized income Friends of Historic Second Church and some member contributions already paid for the full year, so if one adjusts for those accelerated revenue items, our true result YTD would be a deficit of about $10,000. It is always difficult early in the year to have a clear view of our performance. This is going to be made even more difficult with the impact of Covid-19 dislocations.
Total Operating Income YTD to 29th February 2020
$68,748.14
Total Expenses, including Loan installments
59,253.36
Overall Surplus YTD
$9,494.78
Offerings are about $24,000 over budget. Member Giving is on plan and Non-Member Giving is $$4,509 BELOW plan.
YTD to 9th March 2020, we have collected $3,264.04 towards our Per Capita goal of $3,564.00. We need $317.96 to complete our obligation to the Presbytery.
With the challenges of Covid-19 to be met, it is doubly important for members and friends to take advantage of the online giving portal. Even though our building is largely closed, most of our expenses continue. You might consider accelerating your giving and completing your gift commitment fr the entire year to help us bridge this difficult period.

STEWARDSHIP IN A TIME OF PANDEMIC
The church needs your gifts in this difficult time more than ever! Please keep current in your pledge and consider increasing your gift. Send in your checks or go online and complete the online donation form. We hope to continue and increase our ministries, for the need is great! As you call to mind God’s generosity and goodness, please respond by giving faithfully and cheerfully!
The Session
STEWARDSHIP UPDATE
As the Treasurer’s Report covers, members have started the year with enthusiastic levels of giving. We are missing some of the significant giving that normally comes form non-members, but we trust that this is because of the many distractions we have experienced since the year began.
With our building closed for virtually all purposes, it is doubly important to redouble giving efforts. Giving has closed with the onset of the Covid-19 crisis, but our expenses continue. Please consider the following ideas:
1. Give now for the entire year. Fulfill your commitment to Second Church in a single payment. If you are over 70-1/2 and have an IRA, consider making a gift to do this from your Required Minimum Distribution. It will be tax efficient for you and really beneficial to the church with regular giving so difficult at the moment.
2. Go now and every Sunday (or at any other time!) to the giving portal on our website or click the donate button below!
3. Reconsider the LEVEL of your weekly or monthly giving to the church. DO you have it in your power to give 10% more than you normally do?
ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING
The promotion of the One Great Hour of Sharing offering is “on hold”. If you have been adding coins to your fish banks, these offerings will be turned in on a later date.
NEWS FROM THE PEWS
Congratulations to former member Lydia Barnes in the publishing of her novel The 107th Street Murders. Lydia lives in Morgan Park and is the daughter of long-time member Louise Ganey (who died in 2011).
Congratulations to former member Peter Soh, who graduated from medical school and is completing his residency in Mobile, Alabama. He is engaged. His wife-to-be is also a resident. He recently joined Government Street Presbyterian Church, a historical congregation that has been the host of many General Assembly meetings.

PASTORAL ASSISTANT UPDATE
As most of you know, I began my unit of CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education) in January working as a chaplain at Rush University Medical Center. Completing CPE is a requirement of the PCUSA to be ordained and is one of the steps I have been waiting far too long to take. I didn't expect for chaplaincy and pastoral ministry to be so different but they are. When you are caring for someone in the hospital, there is no guarantee that you will see them again whereas working in a church, I have a relationship with each and every one of you. Being a chaplain is HARD. It is sad. It is emotionally and mentally draining. It is sharing in the suffering of people you have never met and weeping with families who have lost someone they love and it is holding the hand of a nurse as she grieves a patient that coded and died and it is helping patients figure out where God is in the midst of their suffering and it is helping people reconcile with God. Chaplaincy has joy but it is overshadowed by the deep pain that is seen and experienced day after day. I have wept with a mom who gave birth to a stillborn and then come straight to Second Pres and worshiped with you.
In these times of uncertainty, the status of my CPE was in the air. We are considered students but we are also essential because Rush's Department of Religion & Health relies on the interns to cover 24-hour shifts and to take charge of a unit. We make up half of the department's chaplains but when decisions were first being made, we didn't know where we stood. Although we are not going to the hospital as often and we are working 12-hour shifts instead, we are still going to the hospital and providing spiritual care and support to patients and staff.
In the coming days and weeks, as the pandemic peaks in our area, I am certain that I will be stretched to my emotional limits. I have the utmost respect for the doctors, nurses, patient care technicians, housekeepers, maintenance workers, security officers, and food service workers who come to work day in and day out and have much closer contact with patients than I will have to.
I have waited a long time to do this final step in my ordination process and when I first started at the hospital, I asked myself why I had waited. Now I know. God places each of us in certain places at certain times to fulfill our call. It is through the work I have done in seminary, in my personal life and here at Second Pres that I feel capable of providing spiritual support through this pandemic. Am I scared? Yes! Do I feel inept? Absolutely. Do I trust that God will be with me and guide me every step of the way? Without a doubt!!
I am so thankful for the opportunities each of you have given to me that has been a stepping stone in my learning and preparing for a time like this (even if we didn't know this is what our world would look like today). It is through knowing you that I feel capable of wading through these murky waters because I will be able to draw on the ways in which I have witnessed you minister to one another through times of crisis and grief.
Being a chaplain is HARD but it is not as hard as it could be because I have a community full of mentors and leaders and prayer warriors. Thank you for letting me walk beside each of you on your faith journey, even if it was for just a moment, because it was walking with you that has prepared me for what is to come.
Peace,
Leslie Deslauriers, pastoral assistant
COMPLETION OF 175th ANNIVERSARY QUILT
Visitors to Fellowship Hall are invited to take time to examine and enjoy the completed angel quilt created for the church’s 175th Anniversary Celebration. Professional quilter Jan Hobson created the design and organized the quilt-square pieces. Additional organizers included Flea Parker, Ruth Sharpe, Jane Tiffen and Rowena Balogun. Members and attendees of the church, children, relatives, and members of Friends of Historic Second Church all participated in creating unique angel squares. The design with 175 angels is in honor of the 175 angels in the church sanctuary. It is a special work of art of which all can be proud!

FACILITIES COMMITTEE UPDATE
So much has changed since the committee met in mid-March. Our building is now closed to all except meal services through the Lunchbag program and South Loop Community Table.
We did however draft revised cleaning and sanitation protocols for our building.
These have included asking all who enter the building to wash their hands, asking Sexton, Building Aides and Lunchbag volunteers to disinfect all tables used. We have asked the Sexton to re-double his efforts to clean and sanitize surfaces in the building.
South Loop Community Table has changed its service to a grab ‘n’ go style meal.
In aggregate, Facilities discussed the following near-term actions to help to limit the spread of Covid-19:
1. Facilities Committee to attempt to procure adequate supplies of hand sanitizers in Sanctuary, Fellowship Hall, Offices, Meeting Rooms and Gym and to provide cleaning disinfectants and paper towels at all times, as much as we can.
2. Everyone entering the church building must wash their hands prior to entering the building or/or use hand sanitizers, as often as practicable.
3. Pastoral and administrator's offices to be limited to essential staff only.
4. Sexton to be provided with protective outfit and gloves while cleaning the church, pews, toilets and the tables.
5. Cancellation of all non-essential use of the church property by large gatherings, including but not limited to the gym, fellowship halls, kitchen, library and the Sanctuary.
6. Pews to be sprayed with sanitizers prior and after Sanctuary uses
7. Suspension of physical contacts during worship services; rather use voice greetings
8. Encourage “Social Separation” during worship services, such as sitting in alternate pews
9. Only gloved food servers to touch food and drink containers offered during Hospitality
10. Money counters should be encouraged to wear protective gloves and masks while performing their duties
Amid the dislocation surrounding Covid – 19, please continue to pray for one another. This too shall pass, and we trust that prayer will bring comfort and peace to you during this trying period.
With grateful thanks to Elders Anthony Ochiabutor and Dr. Lisa Henry-Reid.
