LCE News from Mrs. Blaney
January, 2023
Dear Families,
2023 started with staff and students coming back together after a Winter break. It was great to ring in the new year as an LCE family! January is always a magical month in elementary school. Students hit the ground running. By January, they've learned the routines of the classroom and grown so much both academically and socially. From the lost teeth of our youngest students to the growth spurts of our oldest students, it is great to see our students after a break, and it is a pleasure to see them learning every day. Even the rain didn't slow us down!
This newsletter will highlight some events of January and preview some upcoming events of February.
Sincerely,
Emily
LCE, PCR, and PCY Awarded Distinguished School Status

On behalf of LCUSD, I wish to congratulate the students, staff, and parents for this award. Our elementary schools are among 356 schools in the state to receive this honor. The Department of Education uses the California School Dashboard, which measures achievement in Math and ELA state tests, suspension rates, and attendance.
Attendance
One important measure attributed to the Distinguished School Award is attendance, labeled Chronic Absenteeism. When a student is absent for 10% or more of the instructional days in the school year, they fall into this category. LCE's Chronic Absenteeism score fell into the "medium" range, with an average of 6.1% of students missing 10% or more of the 2021-22 school year. COVID didn't help! The calendar linked above is a reminder of when district breaks are scheduled for this school year, and if you wish to access next year's calendar to help you schedule your vacations to coincide with school breaks, please use the link.

Traffic Pattern Reminders

I often receive phone calls and emails from our families and our neighbors about the traffic and parking violations around the school. Please do your part to follow street signs (no left-turn signs, no U-turn signs, etc.). Do not block our neighbors' driveways. And please, please stop at and never block crosswalks. The map above shows the best routes to take, sticking to wider streets so that the students and families who walk to school feel safer. We all must do our part.
Character Counts

LCE has been focusing on the pillar of FAIRNESS and will soon focus on the pillar of CARING for the next few weeks. Students will be reminded to show care and concern for others, be kind and considerate even when others are not, help find a way to help others, show concern for others’ well–being, act compassionately and with empathy, and be willing to show mercy and forgiveness.
Universal PreKindergarten Update for LCUSD
For the 2023-24 school year, students turning 5 between Sept. 2 and April 2 will qualify for Transitional Kindergarten. TK classes are currently offered at LCE and PCR campuses. For enrollment information, please visit our website.
