Annual Salute to Veterans!
Our annual Salute to Veterans event will take place Monday, November 11th beginning with an assembly in their honor at 9:00 am in the Cafeteria followed by a breakfast in the Media Center. This is our school's way of honoring the Maryland Patriot Guard and the other brave veterans in our community. There will be honored guests in attendance from the MD Patriot Guard and our school community. We would like to honor any of our families with members currently serving or who have previously served in the armed forces.
If you will be participating in our school Veterans Day celebration, please complete the survey below and click the SUBMIT button when finished.
American Education Week:
The National Education Association was one of the creators and original sponsors of American Education Week. Distressed that 25 percent of the country's World War I draftees were illiterate and 9 percent were physically unfit, representatives of the NEA and the American Legion met in 1919 to seek ways to generate public support for education. In its resolution, the NEA called for: "An educational week ... observed in all communities annually for the purpose of informing the public of the accomplishments and needs of the public schools and to secure the cooperation and support of the public in meeting those needs." The first observance of American Education Week occurred December 4-10, 1921, with the NEA and American Legion as the cosponsors. A year later, the then U.S. Office of Education joined the effort as a cosponsor, and the PTA followed in 1938. American Education Week is always celebrated the week prior to the week of Thanksgiving.
This year, American Education Week is being held from November 18-22. In keeping with tradition, Lisbon Elementary invites our families (adults only) to support education by joining us at school. While guests are invited to join us throughout the week at any time, various grade levels are also hosting special events throughout the week. Below is a chart of the dates, time and central focus of these events.
- K: Thursday, November 21 @ 11:30-12:00 Thanksgiving songs & crafts
- 1: Thursday, November 21 @ 10:00-11:00 STEM Activity
- 2: Wednesday, November 20 @ 10:00-11:00 STEM Activity
- 3: Friday, November 22 @ 12:00-1:00 Mindset Activity
- 4: Tuesday, November 19 @ 10:00-11:00 Science Activity
- 5: Tuesday, November 19 @ 12:00-1:00 Wax Museum Presentations
If you choose to come at a different time, you will find the master schedule below to assist in your planning.
School Bank Is Open!
As part of our on-going partnership with Sandy Spring Bank, our Lisbon school bank is open again! Each Friday throughout the school year students are able to make deposits here at school. Students who want to make a deposit to their account will have the opportunity from 8:30 to 8:50 a.m. each Friday when school is in session.
Information about our school banking can be found here. Visit Sandy Spring Bank’s website for more information (www.sandyspringbank.com) and complete the form to open a new student savings account.
Halloween Parade:
On Thursday, October 31, 2019, Lisbon ES will celebrate Halloween. Our annual costume parade around the front of the school (outside weather permitting) will be held at 2:00 p.m. this year. However due to logistical concerns, only room parents and designated volunteers assisting with the parties may come into the classrooms.
Please review the following reminders/updates.
- Avoid any costumes that perpetuate violence, have any blood, gore, scary masks, or contain any type of weapons. Props that come with costumes that are “play weapons” are not allowed in school. This includes but is not limited to toy guns, knives, swords, sickles, pitchforks, etc.
- If you prefer that your child does not take part in the parade, please send a note to your child’s teacher or contact Mrs. Anoff at debra_anoff@hcpss.org.
- Visitors are welcome to watch the parade outside and gather in the front of the building! Staff members will be available to help guide all visitors. However, due to logistical concerns, ONLY room parents and designated volunteers assisting with the parties will be permitted into classrooms. We ask that all other visitors remain outside of the building to enjoy the parade. Thank you for your cooperation.
Student/Parent Conferences:
From Monday November 25th through Wednesday November 27th teachers will conduct Parent/Teacher Conferences. Teachers generally schedule conferences on Monday and Tuesday from 1:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. If teachers offer conferences in the evening on both Monday and Tuesday, they are not required to work on Wednesday. Some teachers may schedule conferences on Wednesday. Please be on time for conferences to be respectful of the conference before or after your conference time. If a conference needs to be extended please arrange an additional time to meet before the time your conference is to end. Conferences are 20 minutes in length. It is so crucial that every parent schedule a conference.

COLLECTIONS
We are collecting coats, hats, gloves and boots through November 22nd for Local and HCPSS children and adults. New or like new condition please. They can also be brought to Community Night.
Useable and unusable shoe collection for Stevens Forest ES PTA runs through November 1st. Stevens Forest ES is a Title 1 school located in Columbia.
At Movie Night on December 13th we will be collecting for Homewood School’s Recycled Treasures. Homewood is HCPSS special needs school in Ellicott City. The school does not have its own PTA and relies on the community and other PTAs for support. Each holiday season they have a "store" where students who have earned "cash" credits shop for their loved ones. The items are then wrapped for them by volunteers. All items are donated to Homewood. Last year Lisbon ES delivered a minivan full of items and we hope to surpass it this year! All good condition items are accepted; examples: purses, stuffed animals (MOST POPULAR), beauty products (unopened), housewares, clothes, toys, etc. We will send out more information as the event get closer.
