CHS Community Newsletter
March 23, 2023
Principal's Message
Good afternoon Canby High School Students and Families,
I want to extend a special welcome to our current 8th graders and their families, who will be receiving this newsletter in addition to the one from Baker Prairie or 91 for the rest of the year. Please check out the section below dedicated to the Incoming Freshman Class, the Class of 2027. We are excited for you to join our Cougar Family! Along with some current CHS students, we had the opportunity to speak with our incoming class this past week. We hope to see you at Incoming 9th Grade Family Forecasting Night: Tuesday, April 4 at 6pm in the Fine Arts Center.
This week, we had a successful start of the third trimester, with students acclimating to their new schedules. It is fun to see students taking advantage of all of the opportunities in our electives and Career and Technical Education classes. Last trimester, our Culinary Arts 2 class prepared food once a week for over 450 people in partnership with the Canby Center.
Our FFA students had a successful showing at the State Convention. Craig Williams won 1st in state in Fruit Production Proficiency. He will move on to national competition. In addition, our Canby FFA chapter won a Gold award for the National Chapter Application and will move on to the national level. Please see additional results below.
Last but certainly not least, your Canby Cougar Dance Team are double state champions as they took 1st in the 1A-6A Show Division and 1st in the 5A Traditional Division last weekend. We had 4 dancers earn spots on the coveted All-state Dance Team - Ainsley Lemuz, Noreth Palangan, Marissa VanHoose, and Claire Baker. A DDCA Dance Scholarship was awarded to Ainsley Lemuz. Our Show routine earned the highest score given to any team at the State Championships. Check out their amazing performances- Show: "Madness" and Traditional: "Annie's Song". We are so proud of our Cougar Dancers!
Please remember that we won’t have a newsletter next week. I wish you a blessed and relaxing spring break. We’ll see you in April!
Best,
Cari Sloan

Attendance at CHS
To ensure the accuracy and efficiency of our attendance process, please remember the following guidelines:
If your student needs to leave class for an appointment or because they are sick, inform the attendance office 30 MINUTES PRIOR to leave time. This will help us ensure that your student receives a note to leave class in a timely manner. Students will not be excused without a note.
Pre-Excused Absence: For any anticipated absence that will be more than three days, students are expected to pick up a Pre-Excused Absence Form from Jessie Munoz at the Attendance Office.
To report an absence, call Jessie Munoz at our attendance line at 503-263-7210 or email chs-attendance@canby.k12.or.us.
Students have 48 hours to have unexcused absences excused. Students may lose the opportunity to make up work for credit due to unexcused absences. Please report an absence as soon as possible.
Remember that attendance matters and students who attend class regularly are more likely to stay on track, graduate on time, learn deeply, and get the most from their high school experience.
Information for Seniors
The Senior Schedule is linked on the “Graduation Information” page. Please check back often for updates. Again, seniors need to watch their emails for graduation information and updates.
