The Bulldog Bulletin

Issue 4 - February 2016

From the Desk of Mrs. Rangel

Dear Parents,

As many of you are aware, beginning in Grade 3, students begin taking STAAR assessments in the state of Texas. The students are assessed in various content areas depending on their grade level, but reading and math are always the constant content areas assessed in elementary school. Each Spring, the state publishes a report card for each school district, which is open to the public for viewing. These are located on the Texas Education Agency website. For 2014-2015, Stephens Elementary "Met Standard" for STAAR assessment results. You may access our school report card through the following link:

http://tea.texas.gov/perfreport/src/index.html

STAAR assessments have been a huge topic of conversation all over the state within the past several months. Items discussed include - the content areas assessed, the assessment calendar, and scores for meeting standard. The following is the latest assessment calendar that has been released for this Spring regarding our 3rd through 5th grade students:

March 29th - 4th Grade Writing (only one day this year) AND 5th Grade Math

March 30th - 5th Grade Reading

May 9th - 3rd and 4th Grade Math AND 5th Grade Math Re-Test

May 10th - 3rd and 4th Grade Reading AND 5th Grade Reading Re-Test

May 11th - 5th Grade Science

While we are always ecstatic to meet the requirements set by the state, the bigger priority at Stephens is the day-to-day learning in the classrooms. We want our students to have deeper understanding and apply their thinking at a higher rate when they leave us each June than when they joined us in August. We strive to improve our instructional practices based on that data versus a one-day snapshot. We have incredible talent among the staff members at Stephens Elementary, and they continuously commit to be better for your students and the standard they are now held to regarding state requirements.

Support Go Red For Women by participating in National Wear Red Day® on

Friday, February 5, 2016

Why Go Red? Heart disease and stroke cause 1 in 3 deaths among women each year, killing approximately one woman every 80 seconds. Fortunately, we can change that because 80 percent of cardiac and stroke events may be prevented with education and action. That’s why this year we are asking that you wear red on National Wear Red Day® and Donate to Go Red For Woman. By doing so you help support educational programs to increase women’s awareness and critical research to discover scientific knowledge about cardiovascular health. And don’t forget to make your heart health a priority. Schedule your Well-Woman Visit, a prevention check-up to review a woman’s overall health so her doctor can measure blood pressure, check cholesterol and look for signs of heart disease, stroke and other illnesses. Then encourage others through your social channels to do the same using the hashtags, #GoRedWearRed and #WellWomenVisit.

Physical activity is anything that makes you move your body and burn calories.

American Heart Association Recommendation: For Overall Cardiovascular Health:At least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity at least 5 days per week OR At least 25 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity at least 3 days per week for a total of 75 minutes; or a combination of moderate- and vigorous-intensity aerobic activity AND Moderate- to high-intensity muscle-strengthening activity at least 2 days per week for additional health benefits. For Lowering Blood Pressure and Cholesterol An average 40 minutes of moderate- to vigorous-intensity aerobic activity 3 or 4 times per week
