PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Rock Creek Families,
We are entering a time of reducing Covid restrictions and returning to pre-Covid times. We are excited to have our volunteers back at school, in person school events and so much more that we have missed.
As we make this shift, I would like to encourage our families to take the time to have conversations about these changes. Your modeling of respect for the choice to wear masks or not wear masks at school is really important and needed. We want for all of our students to feel like it is OK, either way.
Our students will see staff, starting on Monday, who will be making the same choices. Some will choose to wear masks and others will choose to not wear masks. Our district is following the Oregon Health Authority guidelines with this shift and the message is clear: It is OK, either way.
Taking the time to speak with your children about this shift, before it happens, will set them up for success. We want to support our students in feeling comfortable at school.
If you would like support in having this conversation, please don't hesitate to reach out to me or one of our support staff: Ms. Solberg, our Counselor, Mr. Beil, our Student Success Coach, or Ms. Schimpke, our School Social Worker. We are all here to help your students through this shift.
Again, starting Monday March 14-- either way, it is OK.
Thanks for your support,
Tiffany

WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH
Every year, March is designated as Women’s History Month. The month is set aside to honor women’s contributions in American history. In February 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation declaring the Week of March 8, 1980 as National Women’s History Week. Subsequent presidents continued to proclaim a National Women’s History Week in March until 1987 when Congress passed Public Law 100-9, designating March as “Women’s History Month.”

MUSIC IN OUR SCHOOLS MONTH
For more than 30 years, March has been officially designated by the National Association for Music Education for the observance of Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM), raising awareness about the importance of music education for all children and reminding people that school is where all children should have access to music.
Thank your music teacher today!

FROM THE DESK OF ROCK CREEK SCHOOL COUNSELOR -MICHELLE SOLBERG
How to talk with your children about the Ukraine:
It's challenging to know how to talk with young children about what is happening in the Ukraine. Cheri Lovre from the Crisis Management Institute has written a blog post to address this for parents that I think you will find helpful. https://cmionline.com/talking-with-youth-about-ukraine/

CHROMEBOOK AND IPAD CHARGERS
We are missing Chromebook and iPad chargers. If your student had a BSD iPad or BSD Chromebook to use while on Temporary Remote Learning, please check and see if you have a charger laying around. Please send them to school with your student.
Our IT department thanks you!

STATE TESTING INFORMATION (OSAS)
In 2010, Oregon adopted higher K-12 standards in English Language Arts and Math to ensure all students move from grade to grade with the academic knowledge and skills necessary for success beyond high school. The state tests: challenge your child to think critically, go beyond multiple choice and ask your child to explain their answers, act as a snapshot of your child’s progress, and help us identify schools that need additional supports to ensure more students are meeting higher standards.
Rock Creek with be taking our state test throughout the month of May. Your classroom teacher will communicate the exact dates.
You can find more information by going to the Assessment page on the district website,
See the download for the official notification form from the state which also has an Opt Out Form.
Please note, we are accepting opt out forms through the beginning of May, we encourage you to fill them out as soon as possible.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our Testing Coordinator, marjorie_downing@beaverton.k12.or.us

CHANGE OF AFTER SCHOOL PLANS
Please be sure that your child knows what they are doing after school, before they leave in the morning. If there is a change to their normal dismissal plans, please send a note, email or ParentSquare message the teacher. If the teacher is not notified of the change by a parent, students will be sent home per their normal plan. We ask that phone calls with change of plans be limited to emergencies only. Urgent messages should not be left on teacher voice mails during the school day. We cannot guarantee that last minute messages will be delivered before the end of the day. Thanks for helping us limit classroom disruptions.

PLEASE LEAVE A MESSAGE
If you call the school and don't get an answer, please leave a message. We often have only one person in the office answering calls, the doorbell and escorting kids to and from class and may not always be able to answer right away. We are unable to answer the door or phone between 3:00 -3:10 pm. Your call is important to us and we will call back as soon as we can.
Thanks for your understanding!

CAR/WALKER ARRIVAL TIME 8:20 AM- CLASSROOM DOORS LOCK AT 8:30 AM
For the safety of our students, students that are parent drop off, walkers and bike riders are not to arrive before 8:20 am. We do not have space or the supervision for all students to safely line up outside the doors until 8:20 am.
Classroom doors shut and lock at 8:30 am. If your child is not in the classroom by 8:30 am, please walk them to the main front doors and ring the doorbell. Staff will escort them to class.

SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL
Spring’s Steps to Bicycle Safety
With more people itching to get outside to walk and bike, it’s a good time to review the rules to ensure everyone’s safety. Be sure to review the best routes to use and if biking, check the bike’s condition before you head out. This short video, “ABC Quick Check” can help!
Here are a few steps to remember:
-
Always wear your helmet
-
Ride in the same direction as traffic, not
against traffic.
-
Be visible. Wear a bright jacket or add
14
reflective material or blinking lights to increase visibility.
-
Stay alert and ride predictably, in a straight line.
-
If riding on the sidewalk or in a crosswalk, ride at walking speed and be prepared to walk
your bike when it gets busy or at the request of crossing guards. Be always mindful of
pedestrians and aware of traffic.
-
Don’t assume that drivers see you – always watch for cars making turns or backing out
of driveways. Learn bicycle safety skills in a class or ask Safe Routes to School to give a lesson at your school!

Very Important: Please label your students coats, hats, lunch boxes, water bottles etc with their names.

NO DOGS ALLOWED ON SCHOOL CAMPUS EXCEPT FOR CERTIFIED SERVICE ANIMALS
