At Crestview, all teachers work hard to teach self monitoring strategies during small group instruction. Self monitoring reading strategies help students read words correctly or know when to fix words that were read incorrectly. We want to know what you see at home when your child is reading to better help guide our instruction. Please complete this short survey to let us know!
How can I support my student at home with Self Monitoring?
1. Was there a tricky part?
2. Were you right?
3. What can you try?
It is very important you wait till they reach the end of the sentence before asking them these questions. This provides the child an opportunity to recognize their own mistake and then fix their mistake (we call this self correcting). This is a reading behavior we want all students to exhibit.
If they need to go back and fix their mistake, encourage them to use one or more of the strategies listed below.
Let's try it out together!
You are right!
The first time he read the sentence, he left out the word "all". Then he re-read the sentence and left out the word "at". He is so close!!
If your student does something like this, first celebrate their attempt to fix their mistake, because this is so great to see them doing this!! Then I would ask...
Was there a tricky part?
Were you right?
What can you try?
They could try re-reading this sentence a 3rd time (sometimes the 3rd time is the charm!) or you could encourage them to get their mouth ready to make the 1st sound of each word when they re-read.
