Glennwood Elementary ~ Where Learning Takes Flight

Holly Brookins, PhD, Principal ~ Summer Clayton, Assistant Principal ~ Jill Tolsma, Instructional Coach

Hello Glennwood Families,

This past Sunday afternoon, Ms. Clayton and I had the pleasure of attending Glennwood’s Culture Night. It was amazing to see this again in person. I am so glad we were able to bring this important event back! Thank you to Kate Reddy for the awesome photos. Please see this note below from our PTA DEI committee:

The PTA DEI committee is so grateful to all of the Glennwood community members who came out on Sunday (March 26th) for Culture Night, to share delicious, fun, and interesting parts of our cultures. We had representation from Nigeria, Poland, Taiwan, Norway, Mexico, Ashkenazi Jewish culture/Eastern Europe, Pakistan, Puerto Rico, India, Turkey, Haiti, Germany, Jordan, and Korea. The children and community members very much enjoyed performances by: Natyam Arts (south Indian dance), Josie Threlkheld (Irish music and dance), Tonchu Martial Arts, and a hip hop dance by Project Slide.

The DEI committee is looking for new co-chairs for the next school year, as our wonderful co-leads of 2 years will be graduating. If you enjoyed Culture Night and/or are curious about more DEI activities, like the April 21st "Cocktails and Conversations" on sustainable clothing and fashion (see your room parent email, child care provided), please do reach out to Nikhila Raol or Amanda Gillespie, at GlennwoodDEI@gmail.com.

Warmest regards,

Holly Brookins, PhD

Kindergarten and New Student Registration for 2023-24 School Year

Kindergarten Enrollment for new students for the 2023-24 school year is now open. All current students (including students attending College Heights Pre-K) do not need to re-enroll to move to the next grade band. However, if you have a child attending private Pre-K, please enroll your child for Kindergarten. Early registration really helps our planning for next year. Help us spread the word among your neighbors as well. Also, save the date for K-Day! on April 20. More info to come.

However, current students entering K, 3rd, 6th, and 9th grades should be prepared to provide (at their school) updated residency information when school starts.

Please go to https://www.csdecatur.net/enrollment to review the enrollment process and required documentation.

I am excited that Glennwood Elementary will be hosting a blood drive with the Red Cross on May 16th. Please sign up to donate blood if you are able. More details to follow after the break.

As a reminder, please provide a change of clothes that can be kept in your child's locker. The playground is muddy, kids spill things, and all kids, even the 2nd graders, have bathroom accidents. The school has a very limited supply of extra clothes and underwear. If your child needs a change of clothes, and we do not have something to fit, we will call you to bring in a change. Having an extra set in their locker will alleviate interrupting your day and will help the child return to class asap.

If you have any older clothes that you were planning on donating, pants and shorts for both boys and girls, we will gladly take them!

As always, if you have questions, please reach out by email at ebarrington@csdecatur.net or 404-371-4435

Two Ways to Help!

As we enter a new month, our food pantries’ stocks are low. And with spring break next week, our students who rely on school meals will need the supplemental food from the weekend backpack program. Can you help by donating to our Amazon wish lists? Here are the wish lists for both the middle school’s snack pantry and our Lighten the Load Weekend Backpack program:

Volunteers needed: Your skills could help a Decatur student in just one hour per week as a Virtual Pal Tutor!
