Thoughtful in Third Grade
See what is going on in 3M and 3D!
Reading Workshop
We finished our reading launch for the workshop last week. Our next six week unit will focus on the fiction genre. Our interactive read aloud was called Mirette on the High Wire. Students studied the story structures for fiction. They are learning to retell stories by focusing their attention on characters, setting, plot, and theme!
Math Workshop
Our classes are finishing up Unit 1 this week. We have been deepening our understanding of place value through skill practice and word problem application. Please keep your child practicing their math facts nightly! Timing them would be an excellent way to practice a "fast and furious" approach!!
Highlights for the Week:
Science
Students used the scientific method to hypothesize and test how many drops of water would fill a penny before it overflowed!! Ask your child what is was like to do several trials and then bar graph the results!!
Writer's Workshop
Students continue to study the narrative writing genre. Each student has chosen a personal narrative "seed" they will take to publishing. Our students writers have been working hard to set daily, personal writing goals. They write every day, with an eye on meeting the third grade expectations!
Social Emotional Learning
Every week we have a half hour dedicated to social emotional learning. Our current focus has been on showing empathy. Students study scenarios and role play ways to show respect and empathy to peers and adults. The kids have been excellent in their ideas and shared responses!
