Happy Friday, Lil Steamer Families!
October 18, 2019
From the desk of: Principal Hoese
We need to let our children fail. Looking back at my time on this earth, I have learned to become more grateful for the hardships I have endured. It was in these moments that the greatest lessons were learned: how to become better at something, which friends are your best support system, how to become more resilient, or how to handle adversity.
I'm sure we can all think of examples of children who fail at a video game and throw a controller or something else in their anger. Or when a child plays a sport and has a tantrum because something didn't go his or her way. No child wants to fail, but what needs to be emphasized by us is that grit to improve.
I want our kids to compete and win both inside and outside of school. I want them to have that desire to be the best. But we all know the path to the top of the mountain has steps backwards along the route. The better our kids are able to handle the failures and setbacks they assuredly will encounter throughout their lifetime, the more productive they can become in all areas of their life.
Imagine if a child attempted to walk for the very time and failed we simply said, "Oh, that kid's just not a walker." Or if a lemonade stand didn't do well and we said "Well, I guess owning a business just isn't in the cards for that one."
It's simple. Reframe the challenge for kids. Show them a better location or promotion for the lemonade stand. Help them back on their feet and try to walk again. Kids fail over and over in video games and continue to play them in an effort to get better and advance. Why should that be any different for our kids' education?
Try your best, learn from your mistakes, and fail your way to the top of the mountain. We learn more from our failures than we do our successes anyways; perhaps we should let the kids in on that secret :)

Veterans Day
We are looking for Veterans who would be willing to come into the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes on Friday, November 8 beginning at approximately 12:30pm. We are hoping to find Veterans who would speak about the branch of the military that they have served or are serving in, how long they have served or are currently serving, and a memory or story that they would like to share. This time can also include an opportunity for the students to ask questions. We are hoping to give our Veterans an opportunity to speak about their experiences in a smaller setting. Each Veteran would be assigned to a grade level (3, 4, or 5) and would spend about 15 minutes in each homeroom section for that grade. Each Veteran would speak to approximately 20-27 students at a time. Following this time devoted to hearing from our Veterans, the entire school will participate in a tribute to the Veterans and their service to our country.
A note for people to sign up was sent home with the youngest in each family at the elementary school. If you did not receive this, and you are or have someone interested in participating, please contact the school.
If you have any questions, you can contact Mrs. Alexander, Mrs. Marten, Mrs. Strehlow, or Mr. Hoese at (815)589-2911.
