THIS WEEK AT SPES
YOUR WEEKLY PARENT BULLETIN
SPES FAMILY DAY -- NOVEMBER 12th -- 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.
“The Leader in Me” process has become such an important part of our students’ lives and we see the growth in leadership skills daily. Seeing our students’ desire to lead has prompted us to ask the students to take ownership of SPES FAMILY DAY in planning, preparation and facilitation. Each grade level either has been, or will be, involved in a specific facet of the day. Later this week, you will receive an email from your room mom further explaining SPES FAMILY DAY and providing an opportunity to sign up for a work shift that you may be working alongside your child. There will also be opportunities on your grade level’s sign-up form for parents to help out before the 12th if you want to get involved in the preparations to help assure the success of this special day! If you would like to jump on board now and help out, contact Jamie Nelson-Hebert or Meghan Payne in the Advancement Office. Watch for that email and sign-up form from your room mom … we know you will be as excited as we are about this all-new celebration of FAMILY! NOTE: IF YOU WANT TO VOLUNTEER FOR SPES FAMILY DAY, YOU MUST BE SAFE ENVIRONMENT-CERTIFIED TO DO SO! See below for details about our final Safe Environment Initial Certification Class scheduled for this Wednesday! If you have not yet had a chance to re-certify, visit www.virtus.org as soon as possible to do so.
OH…did we mention that SPES FAMILY DAY is not a fundraiser? We will sell a wrist band to students of school age and adults who want to join in the fun and games for $15 which will only cover the cost of the day. A wrist band will allow the wearer to enjoy all of the fun jumps, participate in the Wacky Olympics/Field Days games, make a take-home art project, get his/her face painted, participate multiple times in the cake walk, have fun with karaoke AND get a TWINS hamburger, chips and cold drink bagged lunch! Where can you take your child(ren) for a full day of fun activities with great people for only $15 per person? SPES FAMILY DAY THIS NOVEMBER 12th!

*PLEASE COMPLETE GRANDPARENT DEMOGRAPHIC UPDATES THIS WEEK:
As the season for mass mailings quickly approaches, we ask that you make time this week to update all information on your child's grandparents. Perhaps the most difficult experience of all is receiving notification that we mailed to a grandparent who is deceased. It is also quite upsetting for grandparents who hear about other grandparents receiving correspondence from us and they did not! So that we can avoid either/both of these scenarios, we ask that you complete the survey found at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/GP2016UPDATE
Any grandparents' names we have marked as active in RenWeb who do NOT appear on your survey will be removed from RenWeb.
*HAVE YOU SUBMITTED YOUR NOMINATION FOR THE LEF TEACHER AWARDS YET?
There are only a few more weeks for you to get your nomination for the annual LEF Teacher of the Year Awards. This is your opportunity to recognize a former or present SPES teacher, counselor or librarian who has touched your child(ren)'s life in a special way. Remember - the narrative explaining WHY you feel your nominee deserves the LEF recognition may be written by your OR by your child! Nomination forms may be found by clicking on https://www.lefoundation.org/site37.php
*ST. PIUS X CHURCH'S CHRISTMAS CARD DESIGN CONTEST NOW OPEN
There is still time for your young artist to submit a proposed design for the St. Pius X Church Christmas Card. There are talented SPES artists from Prek through 8th grade so we encourage all interested students to view the Christmas Card competition flyer on Resource Documents on RenWeb and consider entering a design for the card NO LATER THAN NOVEMBER 7th.
*NOVEMBER 3rd OPEN HOUSE AND EARLY AFTERCARE CLOSURE:
Beginning Monday, students may pick up a Leadership Role Job Application and apply for one of the various school jobs we are advertising this quarter. Paper applications will be made available, but if they should run out, they will be posted on Renweb under Resource Documents. Students are to give the "Teacher Referral Form" to a current teacher. The job application itself should be completed and signed by a parent. The deadline to turn in applications is this coming Friday, October 14th. School-wide job openings and the application period will be publicized each quarter so students may apply again if not selected the first time they apply. If you would like to see the video that our Video Production filmed to introduce the Leader In Me school-wide job application process, click on the last link listed below in the "HYPERLINK" section of this newsletter.
*FAMILY LEARNING COMMITTEE NEEDS YOUR ASSISTANCE:
1) Daily we see more and more of our children show "buy in" and demonstrate leadership skills at school. We want to share stories of those leadership displays but we also would like to be able to share the ways "Leader in Me" is being taken home and shared with you in your child's thoughts, words and actions. Our hope is to start a SPES Leader In Me blog which will include these stories and possibly even provide a forum for guest bloggers --- that's YOU!
2) If you would like to be a guest "Leader in Me" blogger, please contact Jamie Nelson-Hebert@stpiuselementary.org
3) If you have undergone training in the "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" and live it in your business and/or personal life, we would love to have you as a guest speaker in one of our classrooms during Catholic Schools Week scheduled for January 30th - February 3rd. If you have not undergone the specific training but work in a leadership position and would like to speak to our students about leadership, please contact Jamie Nelson-Hebert@stpiuselementary.org
