Keeping Up With Kindergarten

Mrs. Enright's Class

February 12, 2016

We had a very exciting last few days with the Scholastic Book Fair and the Valentine's Day party today. Thank you so much to all of you for volunteering, sending in supplies and for making sure your child came to school with little goodies to pass out. They had such a great day and it wouldn't have been possible without your help. A special thank you also to our room mom, Becky Foley, for all of her planning and preparation for today.

Our next day together, Wednesday the 17th, is our 100th day celebration. Please see the sign up genius that Becky set up for us if you would like to volunteer. We will be running about 5 different stations and would love to have some extra hands. Also, please remember to send in your 100th day writing piece and 100th day collection if you have not done so already. It has been fun seeing all the creative ideas coming in!

With the addition of new iPads to our K/1 hallway, we are asking for donations of headphones for the students to use. Ideally, we would love for each student to bring in their own pair in a labeled ziplock bag but being this far into the school year, we could get by with just 6 pairs to use during group work at centers until a new supply list comes out for next year. Thank you in advance to anyone who can help out with donations!

What's Happening in the Classroom?

Literacy: We have been working very hard the past couple weeks on reading and writing both CVC and CVCe pattern words as well as some new trick words: and, are, the. We have been using our white boards to write out words such as zip, web, bat, fun, etc. With the trick words we have been focusing on the idea that these words do not follow our normal phonics rules and when we stop to sound them out, they try to trick us.

Math: We have been working with unifix cubes to work on counting and grouping by 10's. One of the biggest challenges with this concept is switching from counting by 10's to counting by ones. We have been practicing this a lot in the classroom as the 100th day is approaching and we count our days in school.

Social Studies: We are continuing our study of how to be a good friend and are working on our class book to share the qualities we've been practicing. In addition to being good friends, we are working on how to be a good audience. We practice this each morning during sharing time and we were so excited to practice these skills when Mrs. McGroarty's first grade came by to share their nonfiction writing pieces with us.
