Learning Resources of the Week

Your cross-curricular source for cool tools, resources, and gadgets to boost learning in your classroom and organization in your work. The focus will be on free resources and I will include video intros to the tools whenever possible. Let the rest of us know if you are using these in your class by posting a comment in our WGS PD Edmodo group.

Sunday - For Teachers

Flipboard is an amazing social news magazine that integrates with your Facebook, Twitter, and news sources online. You can also create your own magazines, which is a great way to store all the professional reading that comes to your email. You can download the Flip It widget and flip anything on the Web into a magazine you create.

Monday - Math

Illustrative Mathematics - Find common core aligned, rigorous questions by grade, keyword, or domain. You can get a direct link to specific tasks (questions) that can be shared with students on Edmodo, in whole group, or as QR code links in math centers for extra practice on topics you are covering in math. This site was built by one of the lead writers of the common core mathematics standards.

Tuesday - Science

Video ScienceHouse

A library of over 80 hands on science lessons. The videos are short and demonstrate inexpensive experiments that you can recreate with your students.

Wednesday - English

Into the Book

A free, reading comprehension tool that focuses on eight strategies: prior knowledge, making connections, questioning, visualizing, inferring, summarizing, evaluating and synthesizing. It includes short videos and interactive activities to help students develop these important comprehension skills.

Thursday - History

Liberty! The American Revolution - a companion PBS site to the TV series, it includes video, an interactive game, and documents to supplement instruction.

Friday - Common Core

Teaching Channel - a free library of high-quality videos featuring real teachers demonstrating their best educational practices. The large library of CCSS videos includes tags that specify the exact standards to which a lesson is aligned.

Aurasma - Turn any image into interactive digital content. It's like a QR code that works on any image that you tag.
