Greetings Shaw Community,

We cannot wait to celebrate our Sweethearts on Friday evening, 2/10 with dances and tacos.

The Pre K-5th grade dance will be held in the cafeteria, the 6th-8th grade dance will be held in our gymnasium. Both dances will be held from 6-8 PM.

On Saturday, Mr. Moench will hold a Parent Workday in the garden 2/11. Please see his write up below for more details. We look forward to seeing you at one or both events.

Wednesday, our district’s Child Nutrition team did a lesson on African food. Our 7/8th grade students prepared and enjoyed eating plantains. In middle school the results of the rich Montessori Culture work that begins in preschool is culminated in a yearlong project where the students create BEAUTIFUL hand drawn maps of our world. This project is called “Mapping the World by Heart”. Each month a different continent is fully drawn and labeled. The culture, geography, language, commerce is also studied. The maps will be on display during the 8th grade promotion ceremony.

Please mark your calendars and join us for a Community Outreach Meeting with the Phoenix #1 Governing Board members. The meeting will be held in the Shaw cafeteria on Thursday, February 23rd from 5:00-6:00.

Wishing you the best,

Principal Engdall

Garden Update

Big picture
Big picture

Greetings!

Another week at Shaw Montessori School with our wonderful plants and animals! We have been amending the furrows in the field garden and prepping for our first plantings of 2023. The 7th/8th grades have been a great help per usual. Even Wheelington’s class has committed extra hours for work in the field garden. A HUGE thank you to all three classrooms!

Our goats have reached the final week of their Shaw vacation. They will go back to the farm sometime next week. I am sure they will miss our Shaw students and all the free-ranging they were allowed to do on our field. Bless their hearts for bringing us so much joy and a great learning opportunity. Next year we will host some more visiting animals. In the spring, we will incubate and hatch more baby chicks.

Parent workday is right around the corner! We will build a path along the perimeter of the field garden. I am asking parents to donate flagstone or any type of block. This includes pavers and old terracotta pieces. Please email me if you have any block or know of a supplier. And sign up for our workday by following the link below: https://signup.com/go/vkqxzML

There will be pulled pork sandwiches for lunch thanks to one of our parents, Lenny. See you all there!

Here is my email in case you need to reach me: james.obrien-moench@phxschools.org

Home Depot gift cards are always appreciated. Continue bringing your aluminum cans, coffee grounds, eggshells, and bottle caps. You can leave them on the table outside the front office, except for the bottle caps. Have your child drop them in their classroom bottle cap bin.

We will also accept any tool donations for the field garden and/or ODE.

Thanks Matt for the paver donations!

Mr. Moench
