Brooks School Reading Adventure Read-A-Thon!
We are excited to announce that we will hold a Read-a-thon fundraiser this year! The goal of our Read-a-thon program is to bring students together with family and friends to encourage reading while also raising funds to support our school.
BSE is committed to improving reading skills and this promises to be a fun and exciting journey for all participants as they are challenged to complete 10 reading sessions over our 2-week event.
The Read-a-thon will start September 17, 2018!
As parents, we all have high expectations for the quality of our children’s education but have limited time. To that end, we have tried to make this as simple and convenient as possible.
Approximately one week before we start our first reading session, you will receive paperwork with your reader explaining how you will activate their personal Read-a-thon page.
By simply activating your reader’s personal page and using the promotional tools found there, friends and family anywhere in the world can show their support for your reader by making a donation to our Read-a-thon.
We hope each one of you will activate your child’s personal page and encourage their participation!
Thanks so much for your support!
Sincerely,
Brooks School Elementary PTO

Screenagers
Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that happening with her own kids and began a quest to uncover how it might impact their development. As with her other two award-winning documentaries on mental health, Ruston takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and also offers solutions on how adults can empower their kids to best navigate the digital world to find balance.
SCREENAGERS addresses the most pervasive parenting issue of our time head on—depicting teen struggles over social media, video games and internet addiction. The film empowers kids to best navigate the digital world and provides practical resources to help them do it.

Allergy Friendly School Environment
Here at Brooks School Elementary, we make the safety and well-being of every student our top priority. That’s why we’re going to continue our pilot to reduce students’ exposure to peanuts and tree nuts. We want all of our families to be aware, not just our allergy families.
During the 2018-19 school year, BSE is going to continue to be an allergy friendly building. In order to do this, we need your help. We ask that you consider alternatives to anything containing peanuts or other tree nuts, such as: almonds, pecans, walnuts, cashews, and pistachios. The cafeteria will continue serving meals that are peanut and tree nut free.
Please remember if your child has a severe food allergy, it is imperative that you notify the school nurse. Also, if they require an Epi-pen, emergency medication orders must be signed by the child’s physician each school year.
Becoming a peanut and nut-friendly building is a collaborative effort. Students will not be punished if they bring in food containing nuts, so we cannot guarantee that children with allergies will not have accidental exposure.
This is a learning process for all of us, but we trust that you understand how important is to respect and adhere to these guidelines.

Destination Imagination (3rd grade and older)
What is DI? Each year, more than 150,000 students across the U.S. and 200 students in HSE participate in the Destination Imagination Challenge Experience. The Destination Imagination Challenge Experience includes six competitive Team Challenges that are rooted in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) concepts. Each Challenge encourages students to explore their passions, discover their own talents and abilities, and learn new skills.
DI believes that when an educational experience is fun and hands-on, students are empowered to take their learning to the next level. That’s why Destination Imagination is committed to providing a supportive environment where student participants develop skills that will enrich their lives for years to come.
