We also have some great news from our cafeteria that our FREE lunches will continue until the end of this month!
This Wednesday is our first school dance of the year. Permission slips have been sent home, and should be signed and returned as soon as possible, along with the $5 admission fee. The concession stand will also be open for this event. The dance will be from 2:30-4:30, please make arrangements for your child to be picked up no later than 4:30. Thanks! We hope to see them all there!
With 2nd quarter progress reports just around the corner we wanted to provide a few quick reminders. We have quite a few students coming to class on a regular basis without the basic supplies (i.e. pencil, paper, completed homework, etc) We are typically happy to lend supplies, but unfortunately these are not being "borrowed and returned", they are just being "permanently borrowed"... We have already gone through hundreds of pencils and it is still very early in the year. We are also seeing a number of missing assignments. These "0"s are taking a toll on grades. Remember, students who are missing assignments need to find a time out of the class period to complete this work. We are available before school daily, and after school on Thursdays. Please take advantage of these opportunities for help, and completion of assignments.
SMMS Yearbooks are on sale now: ( order online at)
SMMS Spirit Bobcat shirts and drawstring backpacks will go on sale beginning Thursday morning from 7-7:30 in the rotunda and during 6th, 7th, and 8th grade lunches in Student Services.

Language Arts- Ms. Waxman
Hello from Language Arts!
We are in our last few chapters of EMPTY, and will then be moving right into a small unit on the THRILL of HORROR ! We will take a closer look at why the "horror genre" both terrifies and fascinates us at the same time. We will introduce some of our well know authors, such as Edgar Allen Poe, who have mastered the art of a great scary story.
Our new root word set, "Beside, Between and Among" has a link for a STUDYSTACK in students Google Classroom. We will be taking a quick check quiz on these next Thursday. Students should be working on these independently at home.
Another quick reminder that Book 1 Independent (Choice) Reading book was due by Friday,October 20th. Students who missed this deadline still have the opportunity to complete this assignment by WEDNESDAY. After that the "0" will remain. Most students should be working on their 2nd book, and have 3 weeks to complete that. A total of 3 books are due this quarter.
We have completed three weeks of TweenTribune. This is a weekly homework assignment will continue for this grading period. It seems that most students have gotten the hang of this, and are doing a great job! However, there are still quite a few students who have not even taken advantage of class time that was provided for them.
If your child has not started working on these, now is the time! Students are asked to go to: https://www.tweentribune.com/dashboard/assignments/, and read at least
5 articles each week, and then take the quiz that follows. Each quiz is worth 3 points, so the goal is to earn 15 points each week. Students should use a split screen to take the quizzes, and locate "textual evidence" that supports their answers. These are to be completed each week by Friday afternoon at 3pm. I have provided a hyper-link In PowerSchool that tells you how many quizzes your child completed and the overall average comprehension score for the week.
Thanks for all you do at home! Enjoy your week!

Mr. Frazier
This week, Team 8-2 Mathematics will continue our study of exponents. We will move beyond the basic squares and cubes, and begin applying the laws of exponents to produce equivalent expressions. This section is challenging. All students must learn the seven laws and be able to apply them to problem solving. To assist the students, I have posted this unit’s study guide (they also have a hardcopy), a Laws of Exponents Cheat Sheet and practice problems in our Google Classroom. I highly encourage all students to learn the laws of exponents and PRACTICE applying them.
Also, Master Assessment grades have been recorded in power school. There are 5 standards and each is worth 20 points. The students must achieve an 80 or better to demonstrate mastery on the MA. As respective grades indicate, some students performed poorly on the MA. I will give those students an opportunity to bring their score up. Over the next 3 weeks, I will review each standard. However, they must schedule a time to retake the test covering standards that they failed.
