What are fossils
Fossils are the remains or impression of a prehistoric organism preserved in petrified form or as a mold or cast in rock.
What types of rocks are fossils found in
Fossils are mostly found in sedimentary rocks because of all the layers go on top of it making pressure to make it a rock casing.
How are fossils formed
Fossils are formed when a plant or animal dies in a watery environment and is buried in mud and silt. Soft tissues decompose leaving the hard bone or shell behind. Over time sediment builds over the top and hardens into rock.

The beggining
Once a Nautilus died and sank to the bottom of the ocean and rotted away leaving its shell behind.
Nautilus
layer pressure
Over time layers build on top of the Nautilus.
Water
Water seeps through covering the shell and making it rock.
W.E.D.
Then the rock and soil get weathered, eroded, washed away, or decomposed leaving the fossil where you can see it.
I found it
Then a paleontologist can find the fossils.
