A Big Book Fair THANK YOU!

THANK YOU to everyone who helped support our school's fall book fair! This is a major fundraiser for the library. With the funds, the library purchases a number of new books, furniture, supplies, and other important materials. These funds also allow the library to host events, such as reading celebrations and enables the library to provide fun prizes and snacks for students. Thank you for helping make our library an inviting space for all!

Meet the Library Volunteers!

Glenda Thompkins

This is Glenda's twenty-fourth year volunteering in the Indian Hill's library! Glenda and her husband, Andy, are both former educators. In her free time, Glenda likes to spend time reading, seeing movies, and working outside. We are so fortunate to have Glenda here at Indian Hills sharing her knowledge and experience with us!

November Research Challenge

During the month of November, the library hosted a nonfiction reading challenge for all students. The challenge for students in grades K-2 was to read four articles on the database PebbleGo. PebbleGo is geared toward primary students and is purchased using the library budget. It is a great resource for helping our youngest students learn to research online. The challenge for grade 3-6 was to a biography research project - gathering information on a person using the database WorldBook Online.

All library challenges are optional and meant to motivate students. Students who complete the challenge are also strengthening their information literacy skills. According to the American Library Association (2017), “digital literacy is the ability to use information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information, requiring both cognitive and technical skills.” The library is committed to helping all students and staff become effective users of all types of communication.

Kindergarten Tech Time in the Library

Every other week, kindergarten classes come to the library for their computer technology lesson. Ms. Kilgore loves assisting and collaborating with the kindergarten teachers to help students learn basic computer skills, such as single & double clicking, dragging, scrolling up & down, and learning the keys of the keyboard. Students do an amazing job of picking up these skills very quickly. Below are pictures of Mrs. Bazil's class getting ready to begin their computer time.

STAC Activities

Our Student Teacher Advisory Council is hosting a number of activities this month. They are wonderful leaders and role models in our building!

  • Fundraising for our Adopt-a-Family - STAC will be selling hot chocolate & coffee for $1.00 the mornings of December 3rd-6th.
  • Spirit Week Dec. 9th - 13th
  • Shopping for adopted families - STAC students go after school with the sponsors and parent volunteers to buy gifts for our adopted families.
  • Gift Wrapping - STAC students wrap the gifts at their final meeting

Podcast Corner

With the holiday season approaching, many families take road trips and spend extra time together. Podcasts can be a great way for parents and children to listen to stories or learn new information at home or in the car. Below are two highly recommended podcasts!

Story Time - Do your children like listening to a story? Story Time has lots of great stories for everyone to listen to. Each story is usually less than 20 minutes long, hopefully just long enough to keep your toddler, preschoolers, and little ones engaged.

The Unexplainable Disappearance of Mars Patel is a scripted podcast for middle grade kids, performed by middle grade kids. It is a fun, high-quality mystery that can be described as Goonies meets Spy Kids meets Stranger Things for 8-12 year olds. It was voted as one of the top 50 podcasts of 2016 by The Guardian, and was recently honored as a Peabody award winner.
