Santan Quarterly Report
May 2016
Keep Calm & Storm On!
LETTER FROM THE "EDITOR" ... MRS. KOWALINSKI
Dear Santan Junior High Families,
As the year comes to a close, I would like to express my gratitude to all the Santan families for a wonderful year. It has been an honor and pleasure to work with your children and the staff here each day. The Santan community is a special group of families, staff members and children that truly make it a joy to come to work each and every day. I wish for you a safe and fun-loving summer.
May brought us many exciting events! This newsletter will showcase some of the exciting events that took place over our fourth quarter. Students celebrated their two years at Santan, they were involved in plays, performances, and water days. Academics are paramount at Santan, but having fun at school is important, too!
NEW: Please know that for the 2016-17 school calendar, we will have two early release days at the end of each semester for final examinations. This schedule will mirror what our High Schools do. We are sad to say good-bye to our Celebrations of Learning program. This has been a tradition for the past 13 years at Santan but we will celebrate our students in different and new ways.
Congratulations to our Student Resource Officer, SRO Fernando Gomez, for being named SRO of the Year by the Chandler Police Department. He is an amazing resource to our school and the interactions with staff and students are priceless.
On behalf of the staff and administration at SJHS, enjoy your summer and we will see you in July at Stormin’ Day to pick up your schedules and other exciting events.
Educationally yours,
Barbara J. Kowalinski - Principal
SJHS TEACHERS SELECTED FOR ACHIEVE NATIONAL EDUCATION SUMMIT - WASHINGTON, DC
SJHS is proud to share that three of our own teachers were
selected to write curriculum for mathematics within the areas of Expressions, Functions and Linear Equations in Washington, DC in May. Because of their leadership and the rigorous selection process, the AMP (Arizona Math Project) professors selected Melissa Stanley, Megan Jeffers and Sarah Winzeler to write curriculum and innovative activities for mathematics.
SANTAN STUDENTS PERFORM AT DISTRICT HONOR ORCHESTRA CONCERT
On Thursday, March 31, 2016, Santan students participated in the District Honor Orchestra Concert. Students were required to audition for Judges back in February by playing scales and etudes to demonstrate their skills. Prior to the concert performance, chosen students had to learn the music on their own and attend two rehearsals along with the Director and other students from CUSD. Our Santan students did a fabulous job representing our school with their fantastic performances.

SCHOOL ADMININSTRATOR OF THE YEAR AWARDED TO SJHS'S OWN PRINCIPAL
Congratulations to our Principal Barbara Kowalinski for receiving the City of Chandler’s 2016, Chamber of Commerce, School Administrator of the Year award. This deserving award supports her efforts to continue to build positive student relationships, fostering academic success, and creating a sense of community for our faculty, students and parents.
Did you know that Santan is an AVID school?
AVID is a fourth- through twelfth-grade system to prepare students for four-year college eligibility. It has a proven track record in bringing out the best in students, and in closing the achievement gap. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.
AVID targets students in the academic middle – B, C, and even D students – who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. These are students who are capable of completing rigorous curriculum but are falling short of their potential. Typically, they will be the first in their families to attend college, and many are from low-income or minority families. AVID pulls these students out of their unchallenging courses and puts them on the college track: acceleration instead of remediation.
Santan Junior High’s cafeteria has recently been decorated with a variety of inspirational pennants with some of our favorite colleges and universities. We are proud to be an AVID school!

and you too can become a Stormin’ Scholar!
