Mrs. Hladun's Tidings

This year, in order to build community, and to consider the challenges of raising and supporting our children/students, we are hosting a series called Happy Families. Each month there is a new topic being covered, and each conversation is facilitated by our School Psychologist, Ms. Desi St. John. Families are encouraged to attend any sessions that feel relevant to can attend one or two, or all the sessions in the series.

Our October session is titled "Free Range Kids in a High Tech Age." In this hilarious conversation, Lenore Skenazy explains why kids growing up today in the US (and many other English speaking countries) have very little freedom in comparison to their parents, even though crime is at a record low. Computers and phones give parents the ability to monitor children (their location, their vital signs, their grades, etc) in unprecedented ways, however these technological advances might impact our relationship with our kids, slow their development, and actually not keep kids any safer or help us parents be any calmer! Lenore talks about how the Let Grow non-profit program is changing schools and communities at no cost, and making it easy, normal and legal to give kids freedom. You can learn more about Ms. Skenazy here and more about her foundation "Let Grow" here.

Join us in the LCES Technology Room on Thurs., October 10th from 6-7 pm (child care provided!) OR for an identical session on Fri., October 11 from 8:30-9:30 am to be part of conversation! See our Happy Families flier here and a description of each presentation here.

Calendar Magnets!

Magnets are coming home this week, or you may have received yours this past Friday! A big thank you to Mr. Mike Girard for his donation to our school that allowed us to produce magnetic calendars for the 2019-20 school year! Mike is also offering to donate an additional $250 on behalf of any family that closes a loan through him this year! We appreciate his ongoing support!

Boundary Study / WPUSD School Board Meeting Discussion

At the School Board meeting on 9/17/19, Superintendent Leaman shared three options for the potential boundaries for LCES and SLES. Mr. Leaman will be hosting community meetings in the coming months to share the boundary options, to share potential ways that students will be assigned to schools (i.e. 5th graders, students on intras, etc...) and to collect input from families. The board will be making a decision in December so that the district is prepared for enrollment and staffing decisions that need to come in early 2020. Stay tuned for the dates/times/locations.

There will also be discussion and decisions this winter about extended day kindergarten options at each WPUSD elementary school as well as a decision to come about where the district's new dual immersion program will be housed.

Here is a color version of the various boundary options that are being considered:

Volunteering at School

District policy indicates that all volunteers are required to have a current TB test on file in the school office. TB tests are valid for 4 years. A Live-Scan fingerprint check is also required for all volunteers who may be working with students unsupervised by a staff member and for field trip chaperones. Although volunteers are typically working in close proximity to the classroom teacher, there may be times where you are working in a separate space or that a teacher may step out for a moment. To that end, we are asking all volunteers to get a Live Scan.

A Live Scan is valid for the adult for as long as any of your children are enrolled in the district (at any district school).

We are working with Sunset Notary to set up another Live Scan booth at our Boo Bash on 10/26 - stay tuned. In the office, we have a copy of firms that can provide Live Scan services in the meantime - stop in and we can get you all the details.

Upcoming Spirit Week

Our Leadership Ambassador Colt Pride Team is putting together our first spirit week for September 23-27. The goal is for it to be easy to put together a spirit outfit and the Colt Pride team is excited to create some contests to motivate students to participate:

  • Monday, 9/23 - PJ Day
  • Tuesday, 9/24 - Sports Outfit Day
  • Wednesday, 9/25 - Wacky Wednesday (socks, hair, mismatching)
  • Thursday, 9/26 - Dress as your Hero
  • Friday, 9/27 - Over the Top Colt Pride

A reminder that any spirit outfits should be in line with our school dress code, and no masks or weapons are allowed.

Parking, Drop Off & Pick Up Safety

Please visit our website to view a map that identifies appropriate areas for parking and areas where you can safely drop your child off/pick your child up.

We provide supervision from 7:55-8:10 am and again from 2:40-3 pm (1:40-2 on Mondays). We find it is less congested before 8 am and after 2:50 pm.

This year, you'll see some new signage out and more student greeters ready to help your child out of the car. We ask you to keep two thing in mind - stay in your lane and pull all the way forward to make drop off/pick up as easy as possible!

We realize that we have more bike riders than EVER before - we are evaluating where our resources are best served in the morning - at the light on Groveland & Joiner or the stop sign on Groveland & Danbury. Stay tuned! If you want to volunteer to help us out with crosswalk duties, that would be amazing - let us know!!!

Remember that children who are riding a bike, scooter or skateboard must wear a helmet - it's the law! We ask that children walk their wheeled vehicles once they are on campus for everyone's safety.

Also - we've heard from our community that there are a lot of debris on Groveland between Joiner and Ferrari Ranch - please use that road (driving, walking, biking) with caution during the construction!
