Food shortage
No food= unhappy people
Three factors that caused the food shortage
- The drain of man power into the army
- The union occupation of food growing areas
- The loss of slaves to work in the field
Southern food riots
Citizens in the south got so hungry they stormed the bakeries and bread shops and looted bread and any food they could
Scarcity of meat
Meat became a luxury. You would only get get it once a week at best . Same with corn and rice and such
Hungry desperate soldiers
Southern soldiers would trade cotton for gold and food with the union soldiers
The union blockade
The blockade made it hard for the south to get food, and supplies.this is what caused the confederate soldiers to trade cotton for food and money and such.
Food prices skyrockets
The average family would spend about $6.68 on food in 1861. Around 1863 the price was $68.00 a month. This caused the riots and mobs
Here comes Mr. President!
When the riots were taking place President Jefferson Davis (confederate) climbed up on a cart and threw down all the money he had and ordered everyone to stop or people would be shot. The next day the southern government gave out a stock of the rice they had to the people.
